Champagne
I think you already know how much I love Japanese sake.
私が日本酒をどれだけ好きか、すでに知っていただいていると思います。
However, you probably don’t know about my relationship with wine and champagne, and that’s natural since I’ve never written about it before.
しかし、私のワインとシャンパンとの関係については、おそらく知らないでしょう。今まで書いたことがないので、それは当然です。
Now seems like the perfect time to bring it up because I recently attended an event where I enjoyed a wide variety of champagne.
最近、さまざまなシャンパンを楽しめるイベントに参加したので、今がその話をするのに絶好の機会だと思います。
Before diving into what the event was like, let me share what inspired me to join in the first place.
イベントの内容に入る前に、まずなぜそのイベントに参加したのかについて話させてください。
A few months ago, I participated in a sake event at a great diner called "なっぱ Neighborhood Kitchen" in Nishinomiya City.
数ヶ月前、西宮市にある「なっぱ Neighborhood Kitchen 」さんという素晴らしいダイナーで行われた日本酒のイベントに参加しました。
One of the participants, who is about the same age as my dad, turned out to be an English teacher at the college I graduated from about 17 years ago.
その参加者の方の一人は私の父とほぼ同じ年齢で、17年前に私が卒業した大学の英語の先生でした。
He attended the sake event because, like me, he loves Japanese sake and has a connection with the restaurant’s owner.
その方が日本酒のイベントに参加したのは、私と同じく日本酒が大好きで、「なっぱ」さんのオーナーさんともつながりがあったからです。
While chatting, we discovered this unique link through our shared alma mater and he also revealed that although he enjoys sake, his real specialty is champagne.
話しているうちに、共通の母校を通じてこのユニークなつながりがあることがわかりました。また、その方は日本酒を楽しんでいるものの、本当の専門はシャンパンだということもおしえてくださいました。
Since Japanese sake is often referred to as rice wine, and with the growing trend of breweries producing sparkling sake, I’ve always been interested in wine, including champagne.
日本酒は「ライスワイン」と呼ばれることが多く、最近ではスパークリング酒を作る酒蔵も増えてきているので、私は以前からシャンパン、ワインにも興味がありました。
But I was so busy learning about sake that I never had time to explore it.
しかし、日本酒について学ぶのに忙しくて、探求する時間がありませんでした。
It felt like there was no more room in my brain for anything else.
頭の中にはもう何も入りきらない感じでした。
Meeting him, however, changed my perspective and made me want to dive into the world of champagne.
しかし、その方と出会ったことで私の視点が変わり、シャンパンの世界に飛び込んでみたいと思うようになりました。
Looking back, I think it was the right decision.
振り返ってみると、それは正しい決断だったと思います。
Tasting as many as six different types of champagne and a unique red wine from Nagano was an incredible experience!
6種類ものシャンパンと長野産のユニークな赤ワインを味わう体験は素晴らしいものでした！
Naturally, he was the host of the event and gave us detailed explanations of each drink.
もちろん、その方がイベントの主催を務め、各ドリンクについて詳しく説明してくださいました。
He had also prepared materials full of useful information to enhance our tasting experience.
その方は参加者の方のテイスティング体験を向上させるために、役立つ情報が詰まった資料も用意してくださっていました。
Without those, my understanding of the different champagnes would have been much more limited.
もしその資料がなかったら、シャンパンの理解はもっと限られたものになっていたでしょう。
I’m truly grateful for the time he spent preparing everything for the event.
イベントの準備にかけたくださった時間に感謝の気持ちです。
I also thank him for giving me inspirations through his dedication to champagne.
シャンパンへの情熱を通して刺激をいただけたことにも感謝の気持ちです。
I want to express my appreciation to the owner and chef of ."なっぱ Neighborhood Kitchen" too.
また、「なっぱ」さんのオーナーさんとシェフの方にも感謝の意を表したいです。
It’s been about five years since my first visit, and every meal has always been healthy, well-thought-out and most importantly delicious.
最初に訪れてから約5年が経ちますが、毎回お料理はヘルシーで、よく考えられていて、なにより美味しいです。
The combination of Nappa’s food and the teacher’s champagne selection was perfect, allowing me to enjoy the best of both worlds.
「なっぱ」さんの料理とその方が選んだシャンパンの組み合わせは完璧で、両方の良さを楽しむことができました。
At the end of the event, I had a chance to chat with the host.
イベントの終わりに、その方と話す機会がありました。
Not only do I admire my dad as a person, but I also respect the host for what he accomplished at my age, during a time when Japan was undergoing drastic economic changes.
私は父を個人として尊敬しているだけでなく、日本が大きな経済変革を迎えていた時期に、今の私の年齢で彼が成し遂げたことも尊敬しています。
So, it felt natural for me to truly respect someone like him, who survived those challenging times just like my dad.
だから、父と同じようにその厳しい時代を生き抜いた主催の方を、心から尊敬するのは自然なことでした。
I could easily sense that he had gone through so much in life, and those experiences shaped him into the gentle and remarkable person he is today.
その方が人生経験豊富で、その経験から、今日のようなお優しく、際立つ存在になられたのだとすぐに感じました。
I’m not the type of person who shows my true feelings easily, the great selections of champagne and wine and his generosity helped me open up to him as if I were talking to my dad.
私は簡単に本心を見せるタイプではなにのですが、素晴らしいシャンパンとワインのセレクションと、その方の寛大さから、まるで父と話しているかのように心を開くことができました。
It was only five minutes or so, but for me, that moment was just as valuable as tasting the seven different types.
それはほんの5分程度でしたが、私にとってその瞬間は7種類を味わうのと同じくらい価値がありました。
In fact, it might have been even more meaningful.
実際、それ以上の意味を持っていたかもしれません。
I also had a chance to talk to the host and the owner about what I recently started doing, English community called "Himeji English Exchange".
最近始めた英語コミュニティー「Himeji English Exchange」についても、その方とオーナーさんに話す機会がありました。
We all agreed it would be fantastic to host an international exchange dinner party together, where participants can interact in English while enjoying thoughtfully prepared dishes from Nappa.
私たちは皆、参加者の方が「なっぱ」さんの心のこもった料理を楽しみながら、英語で交流できる国際交流ディナーパーティーを一緒に開催するのは素晴らしいことだと意見が一致しました。
I think it would be a lot of fun if we could team up and make that happen.
それを実現できたら、とても楽しいだろうと思います。
