I just wrote down a phrase that I've always wanted to master but has been slipping away from my memory before I knew it.
私はずっとマスターしたいと思っていたのに、いつの間にか忘れてしまっていたフレーズを今書きました。
The phrase is "frowned upon," which I came across while watching my favorite TV show, "Friends."
そのフレーズは「frowned upon」で、大好きなテレビ番組「Friends」を見ているときに出会いました。
One of the main characters, Ross, used the phrase when he admitted that he was dating a student from the college where he works.
主要キャラクターの一人であるロスが、大学で教えている生徒と付き合っていることを認めたときにこのフレーズを使いました。
While Ross thought it was just frowned upon, his coworkers insisted that it was against the rules and that he would get fired.
ロスはそれが単に「frowned upon」（眉をひそめられる、嫌な顔をされる）だけだと思っていましたが、同僚たちはそれがルールに違反していて、解雇されるだろうと主張しました。
I understood the nuance of the phrase and how it was pronounced, but the problem was that I couldn't spell it correctly.
このフレーズのニュアンスと発音は理解していたのですが、正しく綴ることができませんでした。
I thought it was "fraund upon" or "flaund upon," but I couldn't get any results from Google with those spellings.
「fraund upon」や「flaund upon」だと思っていましたが、そのスペルではGoogleで検索しても結果が出ませんでした。
I went back to the video to see if English subtitles were available.
そこで、再びビデオに戻り、英語の字幕が利用できるか確認しました。
Luckily, they were, so I turned them on and finally got the correct spelling, and here I am.
幸いにも字幕があったので、それをオンにしてようやく正しいスペルを見つけました。そして、今こうしてここに書いています。
By writing in this journal, I hope I'll never forget the phrase itself and its spelling.
これを書くことで、フレーズ自体とそのスペルを忘れないようにしたいです。
In addition, I finally got a joke thrown by Chandler the other day.
加えて、先日ついにチャンドラーが言ったジョークを理解しました。
This is also one of those scenes I've watched many times, but I hadn't understood it for so long.
これも何度も見ているシーンの一つですが、長い間理解できませんでした。
It's a scene where all six characters are playing poker together.
6人全員が一緒にポーカーをしているシーンです。
All of a sudden, the most unique character of the group, Phoebe, says, "Joker is poker with a J," which is a playful and nonsensical way of connecting the two words.
突然、グループの中で最もユニークなキャラクターであるフィービーが「ジョーカーはJのついたポーカーだ」と言い、これは2つの単語をふざけて無理やりつなげたものです。
In response to her remark, Chandler, who loves being sarcastic and telling jokes, says, "That's joincidence with a C," which is a made-up word that humorously mimics Phoebe's logic.
その言葉に対して、皮肉やジョークが好きなチャンドラーが「それはCのついた'joincidence'だ」と言います。これはフィービーの論理を面白おかしく模倣した造語です。
He combined "coincidence" and "J," but that’s an intentionally incorrect letter swap.
彼は「coincidence（偶然）」と「J」を組み合わせましたが、意図的に間違った文字の置き換えをしています。（フィービーの「ジョーカーはJのついたポーカーだ」に対して、「それは偶然だよ＝That's coincidence. と普通に言えばいいところを、あえて 「C のついた joincidence だよ」とフィービーの言い方を真似して返答しています）
It’s a clever way to show Chandler's quick wit while also poking fun at Phoebe's unique way of thinking.
これはチャンドラーの機知をうまく表現しつつ、フィービーの独特な思考をからかう巧妙な方法です。
After all these years, I don't know why it clicked all of a sudden.
これだけ長い間分からなかったのに、どうして突然理解できたのかはわかりません。
Not only could I finally catch what Chandler said, but I also got the meaning of his joke.
チャンドラーが何を言ったのかだけでなく、彼のジョークの意味もついに理解できました。
Talk about an aha moment!
