LF に最適なレンズマウント設計

ALEXA LFは、新しいLPLレンズマウントである ARRI Signature Prime レンズ、ALEXA LF カメラ、PL-to-LPLアダプターで構成されたラージフォマットシステムの一部です。

Hello my name is Marc Shipman Mueller. I'm the product manager for the ALEXA LF at ARRI. And as part of this video series I will introduce you to the LPL lens mount and the PL to LPL adapter. Alexa LF is part of a complete large format system consisting of the ARRI Signature Prime Lenses, the new LPL lens mount and the Alexa LF camera and last but not least the PL to LPL adapter.

When we started thinking about the Signature Prime Lenses, we asked our optical designers what is the ideal lens mount for a full frame lens.
And they told us that the PL lens mount is actually not ideal.
Because the diameter of the PL lens mount, the 54 millimeters was designed for a super 35 image.
For large frame of course has a larger image. Also the flange focal depth that is the distance between this flange and the film plane was designed for film cameras when we still had mirror shutters.
So the distance actually is longer than is ideal for optics design.
So what is the ideal lens mount for full frame lens?

Well, we've implemented it with the LPL lens mount.
It's a larger diameter, this is a 64 millimeter diameter and it's a shorter flange focal depth, that's a 44 millimeter flange focal depth. As this allows us and really anybody else who makes lenses with an LPL lens mount to make lenses that are smaller and lighter with a faster T stop.
And at the same time with better image quality and a more pleasing Bokeh which is something we always strive for, the combination of all those features would not be possible with a PL lens mount which is why we went to the LPL lens mount.

Now those are the dimensions of the LPL lens mount.
The actual mechanics are very similar to the PL lens mount. We actually had a number of different types of designs that we looked at some very interesting. But we felt that most of them ended up being too complicated and we wanted something very robust very reliable and the PL lens mount mechanics are robust they've proven they're reliable so that's what's being used here. Now when we designed this we thought long and hard about compatibility because we know not everybody's gonna use these lenses in the beginning not everybody's gonna want to use LPL lenses and people may also want to use other cameras. So we came up with a following system.

まず LPLマウントを介して ALEXA LF に取り付けられた Signature Prime レンズがあります。それを使う誰しもがまた別の ALEXA の機体を使用したいと思うでしょう。なので、この LPLマウントは、通常のALEXA Classic、ALEXA XT、ALEXA SXTでも利用できます。

2機目の LPL マウント（LPL mout for ALEXA Mini/AMIRA）は ALEXA Mini または AMIRA に取り付けることができます。
3機目のマウント（LPL mout for ALEXA 65）は ALEXA 65 専用に設計されています。また他のカメラメーカーに対しても、このレンズマウントのライセンス提供をしているため、他のカメラでも Signature Prime レンズを使うことができます。

カメラ側の説明は以上です。ではレンズ側を見てみましょう。

First we have the Signature Primes that attached to an LPL lens mount attached to an ALEXA LF camera. Now anybody who uses that will probably also want to use another ALEXA so that same LPL lens mount also works with regular ALEXA classics, XT's and SXT's. A second LPL lens mount can be attached to the AlEXA Mini or the AMIRA. And then a third lens mount is designed specifically for the ALEXA 65. So we also a licensing this lens mount to other camera manufacturers. So you can use Signature Prime lenses on other cameras as well.
That's it on the camera side now so let's look at the lens side.

私たちはARRIのレンタル事業部と話をし、現在では すべての ALEXA 65 用レンズが LPL マウントに変更されています。また LPL マウントは、他のレンズメーカーにもライセンス提供をしているので、じきに他社より LPL マウントのレンズが出始めるでしょう。

また私たちは PLマウントのレンズの需要があることも知っています。そのために、前述の PL-to-LPL アダプターがあります。
このアダプターは、PLマウントのSuper35用レンズ、PLマウントのフルフレームレンズで機能し、PL用のレンズとLPL用のレンズの素早い交換が可能となり、LPL マウントにしっかりと固定されます。
これはとても重要な点ですので、私たちは出荷する全てのカメラ1台に対して、アダプター1機を必ず付けて出荷することを決めました。

We talked with ARRI Rental, and they are now changing all their 65 format lenses to LPL mount. And we're also licensing the LPL mount to other lens manufacturers. So you will start seeing lenses from other lens manufacturers with the LPL lens mount. But we do know that people also want to use PL mount lenses. So there is the before-mentioned adapter the PL-to-LPL adapter. This adapter works with PL mounts super 35 and PL mount full-frame lenses. It allows you to quickly switch on the set between a PL mount lens and LPL mount lens and it is very securely in the LPL mount. Because this is so important we decided to ship one with every camera that was shipping out.
