Thoughts on Movies 2024/12/27

i watched the Canadian movie "I Like Movies". above all, the story of a boy's growth who loves movies may sound commonplace, but it was a story about a unique, comical, energetic, painful lonely boy desperately trying to get out of himself. he's Lawrence. he's not good at communicating, and he can't even talk to anyone other than his best friend Matt, who's always hanging around. it's not that Lawrence is a poor talker. it would be better to say that he is not good at talking to the other person than that he is bad at speaking. in any case, he is a third-year high school student in the middle of a "symptomatic syndrome" in which he always talks fast and doesn't stop until his opponent is dumbfounded. his dream is to learn about movies from Todd Solons at  New York university, and he believes his mother has repeatedly said, "my life has improved since i entered college," and that he will be able to get rid of himself and restart his life only when he can start theuniversity days in New York university.  however, when his mother told him, "as a single mother and secretary, i can't afford to send you to New York university," Lawrence wanted to earn his own tuition and started working part-time at a video rental shop he was visiting. then, he meets the manager, Alana, and the clerks, and begins to develop a strange friendship. however, Lawrence believes that New York University is the only way out of this life to new one, changing from Lawrence himself to a new one, increasing his anxiety whenever his mother opposes him to go on to New York university. and when his best friend Matt asks him, "what would you think if i told you i was going to New York with you?" he throws insensitive words like, "you're my best friend in high school, and when my new life begins at New York university, i'm sure i'll have a better friend to talk to about movies." and he doesn't even realize that little by little Matt started to distance himself from him from that day on. Lawrence's high school memory film, which is supposed to be filming with Matt, is also on the rocks when Matt invites a movie-loving girl to join him. moreover, Matt sais that the girl already passed the university of Toronto and that he's planning to go to Toronto because she'd major in film, so Lawrence, who only submitted applications to New York university and has not yet received a notice of acceptance, has a panic attack because of strong lonliness and anxiety. Lawrence has come to trust Alana, who has really bumped into Lawrence and revealed her past events that have destroyed her own hopes for the future. with Alana's advice, he also agreed to take a Canadian university for "slip-slip". and when he began to feel that something was going to work out for him little by little. incidents happen at times like that. Lawrence and Matt are asked by their homeroom teacher for rough versions of the memory film. Lawrence tries to gloss over the situation by making excuses, but Matt says he can submit it because he is making a film with the girl he was trying to join before. then, as Lawrence approached Matt to make up and Lawrence moved up saturday night's part-time job early, Matt replied OK to Lawrence, who invited Matt to watch a late-night show together on saturday night as before. however, Matt, who is supposed to come at 10 p.m. on saturday, doesn't come to the store even after midnight. in addition, when Lawrence searched the membership information of the video rental store, Matt's membership information was changed to another store! when Lawrence is depressed and says he's going to stay at the store, the senior clerk is worried that he'll find out about it, but when he leaves the store, he reminds him not to forget to lock it up and type in the security code. but Lawrence would ignore the words of his senior clerk. in the late morning, he wakes up and unconsciously leave the front door open and go home. waiting for him at home is... i'm not going to write any more spoilers, but what i strongly thought was that i could understand his painfully continuing to struggle with his motivation to become a person who is not who he is now. in the end, no reconciliation was reached between Lawrence and Matt, and Lawrence was unable to stay at his part-time shop, and he also broke up with Alana, and Lawrence's place of study was not New York university. but the movie had an unhappy ending, which is not the case. Alana was an adult, after all. by bumping into Lawrence, Alana realized that she was still traumatized by the past and that she had given up her dream, and finally answered Lawrence, who asked her a name for a movie she likes best which he has never seen before, and she gave Lawrence valuable advice on making friends.
The film is Chandler Levack's feature-length debut and is said to be packed with his autobiographical elements. i want you to see in the theater what pain and troubles Lawrence will overcome before the last scene, who loves movies, but is rather picky and clumsy and looks like a baby who only knows how to cry.
