葛尾村の夏は一日の始まりが早い。5時には明るくなり、雉の鳴き声で目が覚め、遠くでトラクターの音が聞こえる。自然豊かで長閑な時間の中で、畑で働き、家畜の世話をし、日々働く人々の姿が印象的だった。
滞在中、この村に流れる時間と営みに注目しフィールドワークを行った。夏の日差しの下で生い茂る草やそれを刈る人々から、居住地と自然の関係と時間の経過について考察し、訪れたお家で出会った置物から、家という空間と日常という穏やかな時間を象徴する存在について再考した。
草を刈ることや置物を飾ることは、当たり前や普通と表すかもしれない。しかし、こうした些細で繰り返される日々の営みこそ不思議でおかしみがあり、人々の独自性や個性を表す特別なものであると信じている。

In summer in Katsurao, the day starts early. It gets light at 5 A.M., and you wake up to the call of pheasants with the sound of tractors in the distance. I was struck by the sight of people working in the fields, tending to livestock, and going about their daily tasks during those quiet hours surrounded by nature. The fieldwork I conducted during my residency focused on time and activities in the village. Seeing the grass growing under the summer sun and people cutting it inspired me to consider the relationships between nature and places of residence, and the passage of time. In the houses I visited, I encountered objects that caused me to rethink what objects symbolise the spaces we call houses and the peaceful time we call everyday life.
One could describe cutting grass and putting out ornaments as ordinary and commonplace, but I believe it is these unimportant daily activities we do over and over again in which we may find mystery and strangeness. They show us the ways in which people are unique and therefore special.

日常にある些細な物事に着目し、それらが持つ意味や機能について再考する。ものと人との在り方や関係が生活の中で変化していく過程を観察し、その変化の過程にある「境界」に興味を持ち作品を制作している。代表的なプロジェクトに、玄関前に並ぶ植木について考察する「Plants Outside of the door」がある。
主な活動歴に、訓子府町アートタウンプロジェクト（レクリエーション公園／北海道、2021年）「誰かの旅、知らない場所」（Second2.／東京、2021年）「部屋と庭 隔たりの形式」(武蔵野美術大学美術館ギャラリー1／東京、2020年)「Some Ways to Know Spring has Sprung」（Si:said gallery／クライペダ・リトアニア、2019年）また、2015年よりアーティストコレクティブSabbatical Companyとしても活動している。

Ai Sugiura focuses on trivial everyday objects and reconsiders their meaning and function. She observes the process of change in the way things and people are and their relationship with each other in daily life, and is interested in the ‘boundaries’ in the process of change in her work. A representative project is ‘Plants Outside of the Door’, which examines the plants that line the front door.

Main projects: ‘Someone’s Travel, A place I Don’t Know’ (Second2., Tokyo, 2021); ‘Room and Garden: The Form of Distance’ (Musashino Art University Museum Gallery 1, Tokyo, 2020); ‘Some Ways to Know. Spring has Sprung’ (Si:said gallery / Klaipeda Lithuania, 2019) She has also been active as an artist collective Sabbatical Company since 2015.
