ワーキングホリデー準備：冒険までの軌跡

ワーキングホリデーへの道
皆さん、こんにちは。ここはThis Is Our Happy Placeへようこそ。私はカナコです。これは私のAll Englishシリーズの第七話です。あなたがここにいることにワクワクしています！ありがとうございます！
前回のエピソードでは、卒業後に仕事をする代わりに海外で英語を学ぶことにした理由をお話ししました。

今日は、この大冒険のためにどのように準備したかを深く掘り下げたいと思います。それでは始めましょう。
大学卒業からカナダへ移住準備
すべてはこう始まりました。私は2008年3月に大学を卒業し、4月から9月までカナダに移るための6ヶ月を準備することに決めました。
お金を貯めるためにとても頑張って、複数のアルバイトをしました。
私はパーティーアテンダントや受付、さらには牛乳配達サービスの訪問販売もしていました。
はい、牛乳の契約をしてもらうために人々のドアをノックしました。
「コンコンコン、お願いしまーす」ってしてました。笑
簡単ではありませんでしたが、私は決意を持っていました。
ビザ取得と学校選び
同時に、全ての書類作業も進めました。
例えば、私はワーキングホリデービザの申請をしました。
銀行の残高証明を用意したり、語学学校のリサーチを始めました。
私は学生ビザや学生エージェントは使いませんでした。
すべて自分でやりたかったのです。なぜなら、いとこの妻から素晴らしいアドバイスをもらい、”E - Maple”という素晴らしいオンラインフォーラムを見つけました。カナダ、特にバンクーバーとトロントでの生活についての情報が満載です。住む場所や学校を見つけることができるし、いろいろなことがあるので、たくさん調査した後、学校を選びました、
そこはホームステイ先と空港送迎もあるところでした。もちろん英語の授業もあり、私はESL、つまり第二言語クラスとしての英語の授業に3ヶ月、ビジネス英語クラスに2ヶ月登録しました。
最良の点は、この学校にはインターンシッププログラムがあったことです。
私は「わーこれ完璧じゃん！！」って思ったんです！
それは本物のビジネス体験で、実際の世界のビジネス経験です。
だから、他の学校と比べると比較的小さな学校でしたが、その（インターシップ）の機会にとてもワクワクしました。
フライトとホストファミリー
はい、そして今はフライトの部分、航空券の予約です。
旅行代理店を利用して最安値のチケットを見つけました。長いフライトで、約27時間かかりました。しかし、予算が限られていて、まだ航空券の予約に不慣れでした。
また、国際銀行口座も開設しました。現金をあまり持ち歩きたくなかったので、必要に応じて両親に私のお金を送金してもらえるようにしました。
さて、ホストファミリーについて話しましょう。
彼らはとても素敵な、愛情あるカナダの家族でした。実際、旦那さんはカナダ人で、奥さんはスウェーデン人です。彼らには成長した子供たちがいます。一人の息子はそこにいて、もう一人の娘はそこに住んでいませんが、そのことについてはまた後で話しましょう。
そうですね、到着する前にホストマザーと何通かメールを交換して、すべてを調整しました。私が到着する時間や、そういったことです。お会いできて(繋がれて…の間違い)嬉しいです、という感じで、、、。 まぁ、私たちがつながっていることを確認するために、何かちゃんとあったらいいなと思って。
そうですね、私は2ヶ月のホームステイを予約しました。3食付きです。到着したときに泊まる場所と迎えてくれる人がいることが安心でした。
ワーキングホリデービザとは？
ところで、ワーキングホリデービザとは何か？
そうですね、皆さんの中にはワーキングホリデービザが何か疑問に思っている方もいるかもしれません。これは、海外で勉強、仕事、旅行を同時にできるプログラムです。通常、18歳から30歳の若者に最適で、35歳までの人もいると知っています。あまりお金を使わずに他の国での生活を体験したい人に向いています。人気のある目的地にはカナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、さらにはアイルランドも含まれます。それは知らなかったのですが、素晴らしい機会で、私にとって正しい選択だと分かっていました。
出発とその日
では、出発前に私が英語を勉強したかって？
うーん、、実際にはもっと勉強すべきでした。私は、2つか時には3つの仕事をしていて、友達と遊んだり、とても忙しくて、、。
うーん、まぁ正直に言うとね、カナダでの生活を（ただただ）夢見たりしてた（だけ）です。なので、私は、仕事の為にトロントに行くことになった日本人の友達とEメールのやりとりを英語で少しだけ練習はしてたくらいです。
そしてついに大切な日がやってきました。
私は2つのスーツケース、スーツケースに服いっぱい詰めて、別れの挨拶をしました。親友が駅まで見送りに来てくれ、留学プログラムのメンバーが空港に来てくれて、幸運を祈ってくれました。
とても感情的でワクワクする瞬間でしたが、同時に緊張もしました。
母は私を抱きしめて、「頑張ってね、気をつけてね」と言いました。
涙を浮かべながらゲートを通り、新しい章を始める準備ができました。
旅は長かった、非常に長かった、（なんたって27時間のフライトだったんだから。笑）
しかし、トロントに到着したとき、入国審査を通り、ビザを取得し、正式にカナダに入国して、、、振り返ると、その達成感は素晴らしいものでした。
『私、出来た（ここまで来れたんだ）！！！』
経験から学んだこと
この経験は私に多くのことを教えてくれました。情報を集め、計画を立て、自分一人で行動する方法を学びました。それは私の自信を高め、努力すれば何でも達成できることを示してくれました。若い頃の、決意に満ち、勇敢な自分の姿は、私が本当に誇りに思うものです。
私の話を聞いてくれて本当にありがとう。このストーリーが、どんなに大きく見えても、夢を追いかける勇気をあなたに与えることを願っています。

Hello everyone, welcome to this is our happy place. I'm Kanako and this is the seventh episode of my All English series. I'm so excited that you're here, thank you. And in the last episode, I shared why I chose to study English abroad instead of taking a job after graduating.
I, I'll leave the link below. Today, I wanted to dive deeper into how I prepared for this big adventure. So let's get started.
All right. So here's how it all began. I graduated from university in March 2008, and I decided to spend for a six months preparing to move to Canada from April to September.
I worked super hard to save money, taking on multiple part -time jobs. I was I was like a party attendant, like a receptionist, and even I did door -to -door sales for a milk delivery service.
Yes, I knocked the people's door to get them to sign up for the milk,
*knock knock knock *
"PLEASE!! " I did it.
So I… It wasn't easy, but I was determined…somehow.
Well, at the same time, I worked on all paperwork.
Like, you know, I applied for a working holiday visa, sorting out my bank statement and started to research language schools now.
I didn't use a student visa… oh a student agent.
I wanted to do everything myself because my cousin's wife gave me some great advice and I found this amazing online forum. It's called E-maple.
It's all about life in Canada, especially in Vancouver and Toronto.
You can find a place to live, schools, and it's all about… yeah stuff.
So after doing a tons of research, I picked a school. It offers homestay accommodation….accommodation and airport pickup, also English classes obviously.
So I enrolled in three months of ESL, which is English as a second language classes and a two month of business English. The best part, this school had an internship program.
So I thought, like, "Well, this is a perfect !!!"
and it's.. it's a real business experience, real world business, business experience, experience.
So, even though it was a like relatively smaller like small school compared to others. I was excited about the opportunity that it offers.
So. Yes, and now the flight part, booking my flight ticket.
So I used a travel agency and found the cheapest ticket, so it was a long flight, like 27 hours. But hey, I was on a budget and also I was, you know, still a beginner to book a flight ticket. I didn't know,
so I al…. I also set up the international bank account. Because I didn't want to carry too much cash. So this way, you know, my parents can help to transfer my money over there if needed.
So now let's talk about my host family. They are very nice, very nice, lovely Canadian family. Actually, the husband is Canadian husband and the wife is a Swedish wife and they have grown up kids. And one was there (one son was there) and the other one is already…you know.. the sister was not living there. But, you know, will talk later about it.
Anyhow…
So, you know, I exchanged a couple emails with the host mom, host mother before I arrived to coordinate everything. Like what time I arrived, you know, and all that type of thing. Like, you know, like, nice to meet you and lah lah lah lah …lah. (blah blah blah). So just to make sure, like, you know, we connected If (in case) anything happened.
Yeah. So I booked two months of the homestay, which included three meals a day. It was assuring to know I had a place to stay and people to welcome me when I landed.
So why working holiday visa?
What is working holiday visa, by the way? Yeah, so some of you, some of you might be wondering, "What is a working holiday visa?"
Well, it's a program that lets you study, work and travel abroad all at the same time. It's a perfect for young people, like usually 18 to 30, and some, I know, up to 35 who wants to experience the life in another country, without spending too much money because you can work.
So, popular destination including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and even Ireland. (← I didn't know that).
But it's such a great opportunity and I knew it was the right choice for me. So did I study English before leaving? Well, not as much as I should have. I was. I was too busy, too busy, working two or sometimes three jobs, and also hanging out with friends and, honestly, just daydreaming about life in Canada. So, that said, I did practice English a little bit with emailing a friend, like, you know, a Japanese friend who was also going to Toronto for work.
So finally, the big day arrived.
I packed two suitcases, two suitcases full of clothes and say my goodbyes. My best friend came to see me off at the station, and members of my Study Abroad program came to the airport to wish me luck. It was such an emotional moment and exciting, but also nerve -wracking.
My mom hugged me and say good luck and take care.
I stepped through the gate with tears in my eyes, ready to start this new chapter. The journey was a long, like, very long, like flight was very long because 27 hours.
But when I arrived, when I finally arrived in Toronto, I went through immigration, got my visa and officially entered Canada. It was such an incredible feeling. "I HAD MADE IT !!!"
So looking back, this experience taught me so much.
I learned how to gather information, make a plan and take action, all on my own. It boosted my confidence and showed me that I can achieve anything I worked hard for it. The version of me, young, determined and brave, is someone I'm really proud of.
