小説『慧子』12／慧子の大学進学と両親の離婚　Keiko12／Keiko went to Univ. and her parenets divorced

第1話～第11話まで慧子の心の動きと発想を丁寧にたどってきましたが、作品の核心部分を早くお見せするために、ここで時計を巻きます。慧子の大学進学から、脳神経科学者として故郷日本の土を踏むまでの過程を３回にまとめて投稿します。
I have carefully traced Keiko's emotions and ideas from episodes 1 to 11, but in order to quickly show you the core of this story, I am winding  the clock here. From this episode on, I'm going to wrap up, in thtee episodes,  Keiko's life from going on to university to setting foot on the soil of her homecountry, Japan, as a neuroscientist.

　慧子が母に連れられアメリカに移住して3ヶ月が経った2005年の9月、慧子が通うハイスクールの科学の授業で、脳科学者のベンジャミン・リベットが1983年に行った実験が紹介された。
   In September 2005, three months after Keiko moved to America with her mother, an experiment conducted in 1983 by the neuroscientist, Benjamin Libet, was introduced in a science class at Keiko's high school. 
　
　人間が動作を起こす際に無意識に脳内で進む準備過程が意識される意図に先行することを示したこの実験は、多数の脳科学者と哲学者の間に、人間の自由意志の存在に対する疑念を引きおこしていた。
   This experiment showed that, when a person makes an action, the preparatory process that unconsciously progresses in the brain precedes the conscious intention to make the action.  The result had caused many　neuroscientists and philosophers to question the existence of man's free will.
　

　慧子は、動作を起こす前後の短い時間だけに注目するから自由意志が否定されたように見えるだけだと考えた。慧子には、動作に至る社会的な文脈の中で自由意志が行使されているという確信があった。　
　慧子は、彼女の意見を科学のクラス課題として求められたエッセイに綴ったが、このエッセイを彼女の運命を動かし始める。
   Keiko thought that free will seems to be negated because the scientists and the philofophers focuses only on the short time before and after the action. Keiko was convinced that free will is being exercised in the social context leading up to the action.
　Keiko wrote her opinion in an essay that was requested as a science class assignment, and this essay evoked Keiko's fate.

　慧子の科学エッセイは、それを高く評価した科学の教師の手で、慧子の母・晶子の母校であるエル・カミノ大学主催の高校生科学エッセイ・コンクールに送られる。
   Keiko's scientific essay was highly regarded by her science teacher, Tim. He sent her essay to the high-school student science essay competition sponsored by El Camino University, the alma mater of Keiko’s mother, Akiko.

　慧子のエッセイはコンクールで２位に入賞し、エル・カミノ大学から慧子を奨学生として迎えたいとの申し出がくる。しかし、慧子は晶子の強い勧めに逆らって、エル・カミノ大学ではなく、中西部の無名の州立大学ミッドプレイン大学への進学を選ぶ。しかも、理数系の科目に優れていたにも関わらず、社会学部を選択する。慧子は、母から少しでも遠くに身を置きたかったのだ。母、晶子は、人型ロボット工学の専門家だった。
 　慧子がエル・カミノ大学からの申し出を蹴ったことで、アメリカに来て以来ギクシャクしていた母親との関係は完全に決裂し、慧子は、クリスマス休暇にも母のもとには顔を出さなくなる。
   Keiko’s essay won the second prize and El Camino University offered to accept Keiko as a scholarship student. But Keiko, against Akiko’s persistent recommendation, chose to enroll in Mid-Plain University, an unknown state university in the Midwest.
   In addition, Keiko chose the Faculty of Sociology despite her excellence in science and mathematics. Keiko wanted to stay as far away from her mother as possible. Her mother, Akiko,  was a soecialist in humanoid robotics.
   Keiko's rejection of the offer from El Camino University completely wrecked her relationship with her mother, which had been strained since their arrival at the United States, and Keiko would not go home even for Christmas holidays.
 

　ロボット工学者である母親に近い道を歩むのを避けるため、いったんはミッドプレイン大学の社会学部に入学した慧子だったが、人間の意識と無意識の神秘への関心を捨てることができず、社会学部から心理学部に転部する。
   In order to avoid following a path similar to her mother, a robotics researcher, Keiko once entered Mid-Plain University’s Faculty of Sociology. But she could not abandon her interest in the mysteries of the human consciousness and the unconsciousness and transferred from the Faculty of Sociology to the Faculty of Psychology.

　慧子が大学3年のクリスマスイブに、晶子が突然、慧子を学生寮に訪ねてくる。晶子は、日本に残った父親・博人から送られてきた離婚届けを取り出すと、父と母のどちらからも相談されていないと憤る慧子の目の前で離婚届に署名捺印し、自分は研究所の同僚、ハワード・レノックスと結婚すると宣言する。慧子は、怒りに燃えて学生寮を飛び出し、夜の草原をさ迷い歩くのだった。
   Akiko suddenly visited Keiko at the student dormitory on Christmas eve in Keiko’s third year at the university. Akiko took out the divorce papers sent by her father, Hiroto, who had remained in Japan, and signed and sealed the papers in front of Keiko, who was furious that neither her father nor mother had consulted with her. Akiko declared that she would marry her colleague at the laboratory, Howard Lennox. Burning with her anger, Keiko ran out of her student dormitory and wandered the grassland at night.
