慧子／４．視点　Keiko／４．Viewpoint

　「私は、被験者は、実験中に腕を上げようと思うより、もっと前に、腕を上げる意思決定をしていたと考えます」
慧子がキッパリ言い切ると、教室内がすこしざわついたが、これは慧子の想定内だった。サリーとクレアの問題提起が「腕を上げようと思った」と「脳内で腕を動かす準備ができた」という、時間的に近接した二つのタイミングに焦点を当てていたのに対し、慧子は、それより前の時点に注目している。視点が切り替わったのだから、クラスメイトが少しは驚いてくれないと、誰も、慧子の意見を真面目に聞いていないことになってしまうと、慧子は思った。
   "I think the subjects had made the decision to lift their arms long before they wanted to do so during the experiment."
When Keiko spoke clearly, the classroom became a little noisy, but this was within Keiko's expectations. While Sally and Claire focused on the difference in time between wanting and brain activity, Keiko paid attention to the timing far back.
Keiko said to herself, “Since the viewpoint has been changed, if there is no noise, that would mean my opinion was not seriously listened to.”

　「『もっと前』というと、どの時点だと考えるのかな？」
ティムが訊いてきた。
「この実験の被検者になると決めたときです。腕を上げる実験に参加すると決めたことは、腕を上げることに合意したことになります」
教室の数カ所から「あぁ」と、驚くような声が聞こえてきた。
   “When you say much earlier, what point do you think of?”
Tim asked Keiko.
"I mean the timing when the subjects decided to participate in the experiment. The experiment required the subjects to raise their arms. Therefore, agreeing to participate the experiment equals agreeing to raise their arms during the experiment."
From several places in the classroom, a surprising voice saying "Ah!" was heard.

　「ちょっと待って」　
　クレアの鋭い声が飛んできた。
「ケイコが言っている意味は、わかるわよ。だけど、実験が始まってからは、脳の活動が、被験者の意思決定に先行していた。まるで人間の自由意志を否定するような、この結果について、私たちは議論していたのよ。論点をはぐらかすようなことを言わないでちょうだい」
「論点をはぐらかしているつもりは、ない。私も、脳の活動と被験者の意思決定の前後関係が気になっている。でも、それを明らかにするためには、実験全体の流れに沿って考える必要があると思うの」
   "Wait a minute"
Claire's sharp voice hit Keiko.
“I understand what you want to say. But we've been arguing about the difference in time between wanting and readiness in the brain. Please do not disrupt our discussion.”
"I don't mean to disrupt your issues. I'm as much interested in the time order between wanting and brain activity as you are. However, in order to explore this issue, I think we have to look at the whole sequence of the experiment.”

　「ケイコは、実験への参加を決めたときに腕を上げることに同意していれば、実際の実験中は、脳が勝手に腕を動かす準備をしても構わないと言いたいのかな？」
ボブが訊いてきた。
「そう。その通り。数学者のポアンカレは、解決が極めて困難な数学的課題をいったん忘れてしまったあとに、突然、天から啓示を受けたように解決策が頭に浮かんだ体験を書き残している。そうした経験について、ポアンカレは、突如として啓示をうけるのは無意識のうちに思索し続けていたからだと説明している」
"Keiko, are you saying that if the subjects agree to raise their arms when decide to participate in the experiment, then during the actual experiment, it's okay for their brains to precede their consciousness. "
Bob asked Keiko.
”Yes. Poincaré, a mathematician, wrote his experience, in which, the solution of a difficult question suddenly came to hie mind as if it were a revelation. He explains that this sudden enlightenment came because persuit of the solution continued unconsciously. "

「ケイコ、僕らは、歴史に残るような知的な達成について議論しているわけじゃない。腕を上げるという、天才的な才能なんか全然必要のない、単純そのものの動作の話をしているんだ」
クリスがあざけるような調子で割って入ったが、慧子は躊躇せずに言い返した。
「どちらのケースも、意識して取り組んでいた課題を意識しなくなった後も、脳が、その課題に取り組み続けている。今回の実験とポアンカレの体験は、意識と無意識の関係については、同じ構造をしている」
"Keiko, we're not talking about an intellectual achievement that will be remembered centuries later. We're talking about the simple act of raising your arm, which requires no genius at all."
Chris cut in with a mocking tone, but Keiko replied without hesitation.
"In both cases, even after we come no longer to be conscious of the task which we have been working on, our brains will continue to work on the task without our consciousness knowing that. In terms of the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious, the experiment we are talking about and Poincaré's experience have the same structure ."

　ティムが手を叩いて皆の注意を集めてから、言った。
「よし、みんな、慧子は面白い視点の切り換えを提案してきた。そこで、ケイコの視点に立って、次の質問について、考えてみてくれ。実験にエントリーした時に、被験者が実験に参加する意志を表明する前に、参加者の脳が、実験に参加することを決めていたことがわかったとしたら、それについて、皆は、どう考えるかな？」
Tim slapped his hands to make the class pay attention to him and said, "All right, guys. Keiko raised an interesting shift of  viepoint.  So, I ask you to think about this question from the viewpoint Keiko suggests.  If , at the time of entry, it is found that the brains of the subjects have alreeady decided to participate the experiment before they said they are in, how will you think about that?".
