English practice as my hobby
Let me introduce myself. I worked at the car dealer as a Salesman until 2014.
Amateur radio
Then, I got an amateur radio license after I retired. Because I'm becoming a radio operator, it was my dream in high school. I prepared many equipment and antennas. And I was granted a radio station by the management Ministry. My radio call sign is JP7MRS.
Cancer
I took job training and obtained clerical certifications to re-employment, but I had prostate cancer by the end of my training.
Since the cancer was early stages, I did not have surgery but instead treated it patiently with anticancer drugs and radiation therapy. After all, I had plenty of time.
After several months, the treatment was successful. Fortunately, the cancer has not recurred so far.
The first motivation for English practice
Anyone accustomed to radio communication with domestic amateur radio stations who wants to communicate with overseas stations. Although there are certain conditions, such as season and time, I can share with overseas stations with the radio equipment in my hand. I can reach the other country by myself. If I can speak the other country's language or English, I can talk with foreign radio stations.
This matter was my first motivation to want to learn and speak English.
Home video
In 2017, a radio club held an offline convention in my hometown Aomori, Japan. One of them attended the event and recorded a video of the whole event, and gave me a DVD.
I watched the DVD and thought shooting videos was much easier now.
I remember buying a home-use videotape camera more than 30 years ago when my children were small. We went out on holiday and shot videos of kids and events.
I did not throw away those videotapes and cameras. I recharged the battery and checked the operation. The old tapes played fine.
Making videos
I came up with an idea. I want to edit and post these old videos on video-sharing sites as a record of ancient times. It may not be unusual in Japan, but foreign video sites such as Vimeo might be interested in seeing some old Japanese life, festivals, culture, etc. I want to put English subtitles in the videos so that foreigners can understand the meaning of the videos.
English Speaking Practice
I watched almost old videos and recorded them over the past few years. Then choose some content.
I have purposes for publishing my videos on social media.
First of all, I wanted to record them as my memories. The other reason was to let them see overseas people in rural Japan's civic life and customs, especially local festivals.
I wanted to narrate the video in English so that foreigners could understand it. However, I had to edit the video with English subtitles since my English speaking couldn't have been better.
Thus, I started practicing my English pronunciation, motivated by my desire to add English narration to my videos.
