Instructions on how to increase your lung capacity from a Japanese National team free diver.

This manual is intended to help anyone increase their lung capacity past 3 minutes, these notes are the experiences and trials of a current Japanese National diver.

Training to hold ones breath longer without the correct exercises can be lengthy with little to gain; I had many issues with diving and did not know how to extend the capacity of my lungs for over a year after I started freediving. After an extensive exercise program, I was able to extend my breath to over 5 minutes.

These are my notes and training methods that may prove useful to your journey of extending your own lung capacity.

My name is Joma Kikumoto, I started freediving in 2014 with very little experience in any water sports, along with a 10 year history of smoking.

From 2014, my diving record was 2 minutes at 20 meters.

In 2016 I entered the Okinawa Freediving Tournament with a record of 4 minutes at 50 meters (free immersion).

2018 Philippines Freediving tournament, I achieved a record of 5 minutes at 63 meters (free immersion).

In 2019 I entered the freediving world championship as a member of the Japanese National Freediving Team. My current diving record is 72 meters (free immersion).

* It is a state of the world competition held in Nice, France in 2019.

When I started diving, I read many books related to increasing my lung capacity as well as searching on line for relevant information. The information I found only helped me understand the theory of freediving.

I have also used training methods that I have translated from English books along with some teachings from senior free divers.

These notes can benefit anyone who are interested in dieting, muscle training, meditation, sleep onset effects, martial arts etc.

1. Common Misconceptions about Breath Holding

Is breath holding just a patience game?

Many people have this thought but this is not the case at all. For me personally, I don’t feel any pain until after the 4 minute mark.

Having asked other free divers, the general consensus is that the last minute of one’s capacity is painful. Beginning any sports can cause discomfort and pain, these pains will recede as you get used to using your body.

Holding your breath is no different.
