京都西山に佇む「善峯寺」の歴史の重み The weight of the history of "Yoshimine-dera" in Nishiyama, Kyoto

京都を訪ねた際に、東山の社寺に参拝することはあっても西山周辺に出かけることは少ない。数年前に京都の三大松の一つが「善峯寺(よしみねでら)」にあると聞いていたので、松好きとしてはぜひとも観てみたいと常々思っていた。それがやっと実現した。

When I visit Kyoto, I visit shrines and temples in Higashiyama, but I rarely go to the area around Nishiyama. A few years ago, I heard that one of the three major pine trees in Kyoto is located at "Yoshimine-dera", so as a pine lover, I always wanted to see it. It finally came true.

善峯寺、といってもご存じない方も多いだろうと思う。
京都市西京区にある天台宗系単立の善峯観音宗の寺院。西南端近く、釈迦岳（標高630.8m）の北東の善峯に位置し、山腹一帯に多くの堂宇が点在する。1029年に、比叡山延暦寺の僧侶だった源算が自作の千手観音像を本尊として創建したという。あと8年で一千年を迎える歴史のある寺院である。

I think many people don't know about Yoshimine-dera.
A temple of the Yoshimine Kannon sect, which is a stand-alone Tendai sect in Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto. It is located near the southwestern tip of Mt. Shaka (altitude 630.8m) in the northeastern part of Yoshimine, and many hall are scattered around the mountainside. It is said that in 1029, Genzan, a priest of Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei, founded his own Senjyu Kannon statue as the principal image. It is a historic temple that will reach 1,000 years in eight years.

室町時代の応仁の乱に巻き込まれ伽藍の大半が焼失した。江戸時代になって第5代将軍徳川綱吉の生母・桂昌院(けいしょういん)が大檀那となって、現存する観音堂・鐘楼・護摩堂・薬師堂・経堂・鎮守社などが再建され復興を遂げた。
現在は、西国三十三所第20番札所として人気を集めるお寺になっている。それに加え、桜や紅葉の名所として多くの人たちに親しまれている。境内各所からの京都市街全域や比叡山を臨む景色は見応えがある。

Most of the cathedral was burned down by the Onin War during the Muromachi period. In the Edo period, the existing Kannon-do, Bell Tower, Goma-do, Yakushi-do, Kyodo, and Chinju-sha were rebuilt and reconstructed under the sponsorship of Keishoin, the birth mother of the 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa.
Today, it is a popular temple as the 20th temple of the 33rd Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. In addition, it is popular with many people as a famous place for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. The view of the entire city of Kyoto and Mt. Hiei from various parts of the precincts is spectacular.

阪急東向日駅からバスで西山の支峯の善峯寺終点まで約30分。バス停留所から山道を数分歩いて上ったところに山門が聳え、石段を上がった正面に本堂（標高305m辺り）があり、その左手（南）に文殊寺宝館がある。本堂右手には、今回の参拝の目的の一つである「遊龍の松」がある。そして石段を上った一画には多宝塔などがある。そこから上ったところに釈迦堂、その上に阿弥陀堂があり、境内のもっとも奥には薬師堂、青蓮院宮墓地御殿などがある。

About 30 minutes by bus from Hankyu Higashimuko Station to the end of Yoshimine-dera Temple in Nishiyama. A few minutes walk up the mountain path from the bus stop, the mountain gate rises, the main hall (around 305m above sea level) is in front of the stone steps, and the Monjyu-ji treasure hall is on the left (south). On the right side of the main hall is "Yuryu no Matsu(pine)," which is one of the purposes of this visit. And there is the Tahoto in the area that climbed the stone steps. Shakado is located above it, and Amida-do is located above it. At the far end of the precincts are Yakushido and Shoren-in Temple Cemetery Palace.

葉が目立つようになった桜が少し寂し気に垂れ下がっていたが、惜春の美しさをかもし出していた。京都西山の山麓の木々に囲まれた堂宇が歴史の重みを感じさせていた。

The cherry blossoms, whose leaves became conspicuous, were a little lonely and hung down, but they brought out the beauty of the spring. Surrounded by trees at the foothills of Kyoto Nishiyama, hall made us feel the weight of history.
