白雲に浮く「姫路城」の美しさ 　The beauty of "Himeji Castle" floating in the white clouds

先日、仏画曼荼羅アート教室の帰りに用事があって姫路まで足をのばした。姫路城を久しぶりに見ることができた。駅から眺める程度であったが、白雲立ち込める中に浮いているかのように見えた。
以前は、仕事でよく姫路に出向くことがあり、行くたびに「姫路城」を遠目ながら見るのを楽しみにしていた。2015年の3月27日に姫路城大天守の大改修が終わり、すべての覆いが外され美しい姿がお披露目された。秋の空に浮いているかのように五重層の大天守は白く輝きをはなっていたことを記憶している。まさに「白鷺城(はくろじょう)」の復活であった。

The other day, I went to Himeji for business on my way home from the Buddhist painting mandala art class. I was able to see Himeji Castle for the first time in a while. I could only see it from the station, but it looked as if it was floating in the white clouds.
In the past, I often went to Himeji for work, and I was looking forward to seeing "Himeji Castle" from a distance every time I went. On March 27, 2015, the major renovation of the castle tower of Himeji Castle was completed, and all the covers were removed and the beautiful appearance was unveiled. I remember that the five-storied castle tower was shining white as if it were floating in the autumn sky. It was exactly the revival of "Hakurojo".

白鷺城の名前の由来は、諸説ある中、「姫路城が「鷺山」に置かれているところから」とか、「白漆喰で塗られた城壁の美しさから」、「ゴイサギなど白鷺と総称される鳥が多く住んでいたことから」、「黒い壁の「烏城（うじょう）」とも呼ばれる岡山城との対比から」と諸説ある。
また、一般の呼称では「しらさぎじょう」と言われることが多いが、これにも諸説あるようだ。「はくろじょう」が本来の呼称で、日本の城郭の異称は音読みするのが学術的には普通のようである。現在の正式名称は、ご存じ「姫路城」である。

見るからに白い。遠目でみればなお白さが際立つ。屋根までが白く見える。
屋根が白く見えるのは、瓦にも白漆喰が施されているからである。丸瓦の接合重ね部への目地漆喰の仕上げで､端部のひねり掛けを行っているから白が浮き出ている｡面土や鬼首などの瓦止めの機能のほか、防水性をより強度にしている。
何百年の期間を耐えられる工夫が随所に施されている。これが歴史を築く知恵なのだろう。
