雪舟寺と呼ばれる芬陀院に、雪舟が造った庭が存在 　There is a garden built by Sesshu in the temple called Sesshu Temple.

室町時代に活躍した禅僧であり水墨画家の雪舟が造ったとされる庭がいくつかある。その中でもっとも知られているのが東福寺塔頭の芬陀院(ふんだいん)の庭園。雪舟庭園(本来の名称／鶴亀の庭)として公開されている。

There are several gardens that are said to have been built by Sesshu, a Zen priest and ink painter who was active during the Muromachi period. The most well-known of these is the garden of Fundain at the branch of Tofuku-ji Temple. It is open to the public as Sesshu Garden (original name / Tsurukame Garden).

芬陀院は、鎌倉時代後期に当時の関白一条内経により創建された寺院。室町時代に入り、当時の当主、一条兼良より亀の画の依頼を受けた雪舟は、画ではなく石組により小さな亀島を主体とした庭園を造った。それが「雪舟の庭園」の誕生である。

その誕生の秘話として、造った夜にその亀が手足を動かし庭を這っていた。大きな石を亀島の甲に乗せたところ亀は動かなくなり、現在の形のような亀島が完成したという逸話が伝わっている。　　　

一条兼良が御礼に、と雪舟に芬陀院を譲ろうとしたが、その拝領を断り、雪舟は画を学ぶために中国の明へ渡った。

Fundain is a temple built in the latter half of the Kamakura period by the Kampaku Ichijo Uchitsune. Entering the Muromachi period, Sesshu, who received a request for a turtle painting from the head of the time, Ichijo Kaneyoshi, built a small Kamejima-based garden using stonework instead of painting. That is the birth of "Sesshu Garden".
As a secret story of its birth, the turtle moved its limbs and crawled in the garden on the night it was made. There is an anecdote that when a large stone was placed on the instep of Kamejima, the turtle stopped moving and Kamejima was completed in its current shape.
Ichijo Kaneyoshi tried to give Sesshu the Fundain, but refused to accept it, and Sesshu went to Ming, China to study painting.

その後、時代の変遷の中で荒廃し、現在の庭園は昭和年代に作庭家の重森三玲により復元された。また茶室、図南亭(となんてい)の丸窓から眺める方丈の東庭は重森三玲の作庭。苔と石の配置による庭園で、「鶴亀の庭」の石組に啓発され造ったとされている。

After that, it was devastated in the transition of the times, and the current garden was restored by the garden maker Mirei Shigemori in the Showa period. In addition, the eastern garden of Hojo, which you can see from the round window of the tea room, Tonantei, is the garden of Mirei Shigemori. It is a garden with moss and stones arranged, and it is said that it was enlightened and built by the stonework of "Tsurukame no Niwa".

雪舟の技法である色を排除し墨の濃淡で表現する水墨画は後世に大きな影響をもたらした。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

特に雪舟の画の中で、仏教の重要なシーンを活写した「慧可断臂図(えかだんぴず)」は禅僧 雪舟ならではの最高傑作である。見るたびに何かが覚醒される。

Ink painting, which is Sesshu's technique of eliminating colors and expressing with shades of ink, had a great influence on posterity. "Ekadanpiz", which is a live copy of an important Buddhist scene, is a masterpiece unique to Zen monk Sesshu, especially in Sesshu's paintings. Every time I see it, something awakens.

方丈には、昭憲皇太后の父、一条忠香が描いた竹が掛けてある。
