世界文化遺産 天龍寺の曽源池庭園を守る赤松が無残な姿に Akamatsu, which protects the Sogenchi garden of Tenryu-ji Temple, a world cultural heritage, looks miserable.

世界文化遺産の天龍寺には数々の見どころがある。
その一つが池泉回遊式の「曽源池庭園(そうげんちていえん)」。

Tenryu-ji Temple, a World Cultural Heritage Site, has many attractions.
One of them is the chisen strolling style "Sogenchi Teien". 

方丈から眺める庭園は、空、山、木々、石、水、風、音などでこの世からあの世を想像(個人観)し連想させてくれる。
この庭を作ったのは、初代天龍寺住職であり作庭家の夢窓疎石(むそうそせき)という僧侶である。庭についての詳細は後日紹介させていただく。

The garden seen from Hojo is reminiscent of the world from this world with the sky, mountains, trees, stones, water, wind, and sound.
This garden was created by a priest named Muso Soseki, the first chief priest of Tenryu-ji Temple and a garden maker.
Details about the garden will be introduced at a later date.

今回、スポットを当てたのが、その曽源池庭園の東南角にある赤松。方丈からも書院からも目に入る、松好きにはたまらない守り龍の如く見えているそれは立派な松である。3年前に訪ねたときは気づかなかったのだが、先日の訪問では、その松を見てびっくり仰天。
何段か重なり合っている枝の最下段の葉以外は、すべての葉が薄茶色に変色していた。枯れているのである。松が枯れているのはそうそう見たことはない。しかしながら、この世界文化遺産の庭園のシンボルである赤松が・・・と絶句。

This time, the spotlight was Akamatsu on the southeast corner of the Sogenchi Garden. It is a magnificent pine tree that looks like a guardian dragon that is irresistible to pine lovers, which can be seen from both Hojo and Shoin.
I didn't notice it when I visited three years ago, but when I visited the other day, I was surprised to see the pine tree. All the leaves turned light brown except for the leaves at the bottom of the overlapping branches.
It is withered. I've never seen pine trees dead. However, Akamatsu, which is a symbol of this world cultural heritage garden, is a perfect word.

庭園で作業しておられた庭師の方に伺うと、ほんと～に残念だ、という話だった。
こうなった理由は、と質問してみると「この庭園は開放されていて自由に観光客が歩き回れ、特に角にあるこの松が張り巡っている根(地上には出てない)を踏みつけているのが最大の理由だ」という。治療して治るものではない、とのいうことで伐採するしかないらしい。

When I asked the gardener who was working in the garden, he said that it was really disappointing. When asked why this happened, he asked, "This garden is open and tourists can walk around freely, especially trampling on the roots of this pine tree on the corner (not on the ground).
That's the biggest reason. " It seems that there is no choice but to cut down because it cannot be cured by treatment.

長年、曽源池の景色を彩り、人の癒しや感動の呼び水として役割を果たしてきた。今後の行方が気になるが、この赤松に勝るとも劣らないシンボルが、世界文化遺産の曽源池の守り龍として登場してくれることを期待している。

For many years, it has colored the scenery of Sogen Pond and played a role as a source of healing and emotion for people. I am worried about the future, but I hope that this symbol, which is as good as Akamatsu, will appear as a guardian dragon of Sogen Pond, a world cultural heritage site.
