ヤマボウシは友情の木

風は爽やかで日差しも明るく、その日は晩春の良いとこどりの陽気でした。
友人と小石川植物園（東京都文京区）に足を運び、美しいマゼンタ色の満開のサツキに出迎えられ、菖蒲の紫に癒されて楽しい時間を過ごしました。

平日の朝イチだけあって、人もまばらで、ゆったりと園内を散策できました。なんという贅沢な時間。好奇心旺盛な友人と私は、あっちこっちのセクションで引っかかっては立ち止まり、なかなか進行方向に進まず（笑）、気付けばとうにお昼を回っていました。空腹をかかえながらもぐるっと一周を達成、かなり満足度の高い植物園でした。

日本で一番古い植物園、ということもあり、木々のサイズがとにかく大きい！！ここかしこに巨木や高木がにょっきりと生えているので、植物園というより、どこかの山林に迷い込んだかのような感覚になるエリアもありました。

中でも驚いたのが、ヤマボウシの大木です。こんなに大きなヤマボウシは見たことがありません！

ヤマボウシがここまで大きくなるとは知らなかったので、帰宅してから調べてみたところ、５〜１０メートル、稀に１５メートルほどにもなるものもある、と記載されていました。

ヤマボウシは、ミズキ科ミズキ属の、古くから日本に自生する木です。ハナミズキと似ているのですが、いくつか分かりやすい違いがあります。ハナミズキは花が終わってから葉が出てくるのですが、ヤマボウシは葉がある状態で花を咲かせます。また、花びらに見える総苞（そうほう）はどちらも４
枚なのですが、ハナミズキは縁が窪んでいるのに対し、ヤマボウシは手裏剣のように尖っています。

また、ハナミズキの果実は毒があり食べられませんが、ヤマボウシの実は甘く、生で食べられます。私はまだ食べたことがないのですが、マンゴーのような味だと言う人もいます。

植物園や山林だけでなく、街路樹や庭のシンボルツリーとしても好まれて植えられている（どうやら風水的にも縁起の良い木らしい）ので、今の時期なら街中でもヤマボウシの発見があちこちでできると思います。私も、近所のスーパーへお買い物に行く道すがら、こじんまりしたサイズでしたが３本
のヤマボウシを発見しましたよ。いずれもとてもきれいに咲いていました。

ヤマボウシの花期は、5月〜7月と長い！梅雨の時期に柔らかで明るい白が見られるのは、目にも嬉しいですよね。

花言葉は、「友情」。
友達に贈るのにはぴったりな植物ですね。ただし、送り先の友達が、１０メートルになる木を植えられるようなお庭があるのが前提ですが（笑）。

ハリーポッターを読み始めました。え、今？という感じですが（笑）。せっかくなので、英語で読み始めています。日本語の本でもそうですが、小説ってその作家らしい独特な表現がありますよね。それが楽しい！英語の小説を読むのは久しぶりなので、読むスピードがめちゃくちゃ遅くなっている自分に少々ガッカリしながらも、のんびり読み進めていこうと思います。


The wind was refreshing, and the sun was bright. It was a perfect day with the best of late spring weather. A friend and I visited Koishikawa Botanical Garden (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo) and were greeted by beautiful magenta azaleas in full bloom and relaxed by the purple irises, enjoying a wonderful time.

Since it was early on a weekday morning, the garden was sparsely populated, allowing us to leisurely stroll around. What a luxurious time. My curious friend and I kept getting caught up in various sections, stopping frequently and making slow progress. Before we knew it, it was well past noon. Despite our hunger, we completed a full circle of the garden, feeling highly satisfied.

Being the oldest botanical garden in Japan, the size of the trees was particularly impressive!! There were gigantic and tall trees all around, making some areas feel like we had wandered into a forest rather than a botanical garden.

Among them, the giant Yamaboushi tree was the most surprising. I had never seen such a large Yamaboushi before!

I didn't know Yamaboushi could grow this big, so I looked it up after returning home. It can grow 5 to 10 meters, and sometimes even up to 15 meters.

Yamaboushi is a tree from the dogwood family, native to Japan. It resembles the dogwood but has some distinct differences. The dogwood blooms before the leaves appear, while the Yamaboushi blooms with the leaves already present. Also, the bracts that look like petals are both four in number, but dogwood's bracts are indented at the edges, while Yamaboushi's are pointed like a throwing star.

Moreover, dogwood's fruits are poisonous and inedible, whereas Yamaboushi's fruits are sweet and can be eaten raw. I haven't tasted them myself, but some say they taste like mango.

Not only found in botanical gardens or forests, Yamaboushi is also popular as a street tree or garden symbol tree (apparently considered lucky in Feng Shui). So, you can likely spot Yamaboushi blooming around town during this season. On my way to the local supermarket, I discovered three Yamaboushi trees of modest size, all beautifully in bloom.

The blooming period of Yamaboushi is long, from May to July! Seeing its soft, bright white flowers during the rainy season is a delight for the eyes.

Its flower language is "friendship." It's a perfect plant to give to a friend. However, this assumes the friend has a garden spacious enough to accommodate a tree that can grow up to 10 meters tall. lol

I've started reading Harry Potter in English. Yes, it feels a bit late to the party, I know.lol Like Japanese books, novels have unique expressions characteristic of their authors, which is enjoyable! It's been a while since I last read an English novel, so I'm a bit disappointed at how slow my reading pace has become, but I'll take my time and enjoy the process.
