日本における最強の有毒植物！キョウチクトウ

家への帰り道に降り立つ駅からほど近いところに、定食屋さんがあります。お店と塀の間からニョキっと背の高い木の白い花が満開でした。あ、この木、なんか見覚えが、、、。

そうそう、この濃いビリジアン色の、細い葉！そして、南国っぽい雰囲気のこの花！どこで見たんだったっけ？どこかのビーチ？それとも公園？

あ。
と、気づいた。高速道路だわ。

キョウチクトウは、乾燥にも大気汚染にも強い逞しい木。これなら高速道路脇に植えられていても、ほったらかしでOK。道路脇だけでなく、公園や街路樹としてもよく目にするので、みなさんもなんとなくどこかで見かけたことがある気はしませんか？

インド原産、和名のキョウチクトウ（夾竹桃）は、細長い葉が竹に似ていて、花の色が桃に似ていることに由来します。
樹皮、花、葉、根、果実、全てに強い毒があるそうです。私はそれを知らなかったので、定食屋さんの壁から枝葉を突き出して白い花をいっぱい咲かせているキョウチクトウの、ぽたんと落ちた花を拾って匂いを嗅いだりいじったりしてみたばかり。汗

どのくらい強い毒性なのかというと、こんな逸話があります。古代ギリシャのアレキサンダー大王がインド遠征をした時のこと、小隊の一つがインドの河原に生えているキョウチクトウの枝に、肉を刺して調理しました。その肉を食べた小隊がなんと全滅してしまった、というお話しです。ギリシャと東洋との文化を融合したヘレニズムの立役者、アレキサンダー大王。遠征先のインドでそんなことが起こっていたようです。
この逸話から、古代ギリシャにはキョウチクトウが無かったのであろうと想像できますね。

キョウチクトウの毒性はとても強く、根を張っている周囲の土も、そして生木を燃やした煙さえも有毒だそうです。調べれば調べるほど色々な中毒事例が出でくるので、驚きました〜汗。
どうりで、いけばなの花材として扱ったことのない木だな、と思いました笑。（でも、敢えて使ってみて毒っぽく生けてみたい、、、という欲求も。笑）

花期は6月から真夏までの長期間。梅雨の鬱陶しい時期に、夏を予感させる発色の良い花を次々に咲かせます。色も、濃いピンク、薄桃色、白、など濃い緑色の葉に映える花をつけるので、長い間楽しめます。
排気ガスをどれだけ吸っても逞しく咲くキョウチクトウ。毒性が強くても、植える場所の工夫や扱いの知識とで、人との共存はいくらでも可能です。
まぁ、、、飲食店には似合わない感じがしますが。苦笑

さて、そんなキョウチクトウの花言葉は「油断大敵」です。笑
キョウチクトウを見かけたら、花言葉を思い出し自戒する、なんていうのも、植物の恩恵にあずかっていることなのかもしれませんね。

スモークツリーのワークショップ、とても楽しかった！何がって、スモークツリーは見た目のメルヘン度合いが可愛いだけでなく、実は香りがとても良いのです。今年は私の背丈ほどある大枝を仕入れたので、香りも例年以上に感じられたのだと思います。ワークショップに来られた方が皆「いい香りがする〜！」と、笑顔になっていました🎵

On my way home from the station, there is a diner not far away. Between the shop and the fence, a tall tree with white flowers was in full bloom. Oh, this tree looks familiar...

Yes, these narrow, deep viridian leaves! And this tropical-looking flower! Where have I seen it before? At some beach? Or was it in a park?
Ah, I remember now. It was along the highway.

Oleander is a hardy tree that is resistant to both drought and air pollution. It can thrive even when planted along highways, requiring no special care. You can also see it in parks and as street trees, so |FNAME| may have seen it somewhere without realizing.

Originally from India, the Japanese name for Oleander (Kyouchikutou) comes from its bamboo-like long leaves and peach-like flowers. All parts of the tree, including the bark, flowers, leaves, roots, and fruits, are highly poisonous. I didn't know this, so I just picked up a fallen flower from the Oleander blooming by the diner's wall, smelled it, and played with it. Yikes.

Just how toxic is it? Here's an anecdote: During Alexander the Great's campaign in India, one of his platoons used Oleander branches to skewer meat for cooking. After eating the meat, the entire platoon perished. Alexander the Great, a key figure in Hellenism who merged Greek and Eastern cultures, faced this incident in India. This story suggests that Oleander was unknown in ancient Greece.

Oleander’s toxicity is so severe that even the soil around its roots and the smoke from burning its wood are poisonous. The more I researched, the more cases of poisoning I found, which was quite surprising. No wonder I’ve never used it in flower arrangements. But, honestly, I’m tempted to use it for an intentionally poisonous-looking arrangement.

Oleander blooms from June through mid-summer. During the dreary rainy season, its brightly colored flowers, such as deep pink, light pink, and white, against the dark green leaves, herald the coming summer and bloom continuously, providing enjoyment for a long period. Despite its toxicity, with careful planting and handling knowledge, it can coexist with people. Though, it doesn’t quite suit a diner, in my opinion.

Oleander's flower language is "constant vigilance.” If you come across an Oleander, remembering its flower language might be a way to benefit from its presence.
