花が爆弾！？ハゼランは午後３時にはじけます🎵

先週の日曜日は、朝5時に起きて、神奈川県相模原市で花農家を営んでいるfour peas flowerさんに行ってきました！

朝早く起きなきゃ、遅刻できない！

そう意気込んでいつもより早く布団に入って目を瞑ったはいいものの、サッカー中継をネットで見ながらはしゃぐ息子の声やら、かまってほしくて私の髪をくわえて引っ張るウサギのマメちゃんやらのおかげで安眠とはほど遠い一夜を過ごしての、起床。

ボーッとする頭で藤野駅に到着したら、ん？なんか空気違う。
暑いには暑いけど、都会の咽せるような空気ではなく、おもわず深呼吸したくなる！

見渡すと、周りは緑深い夏の山。
それだけで私の目はパッカーンと開き、急にワクワクしてくるのですから、自然が人に及ぼす作用ってすごいですよね〜。

さて、今回の花農家訪問の目的は、「お花の栽培方法について学ぶ＆自分で収穫したお花を使ったブーケを作る」の体験セットです。
JTBのサステナブル企画ですが、とても満足度の高い体験をすることができました。
午前中約３時間の中で、ぎゅっと中身の詰まった濃い時間を過ごしました。花農家さん（four peas flower・聡子さん）のお話を聞き、畑を見学、次に
お花の栽培体験（今回は台風で倒れたダリアの株を起こして支柱を立てる、傷んだ花を切り、良いものを残す作業）をし、お花が出荷されるまでの苦労の一部（ほんの一部でしょうけど）を体感しながら、花に触れる。
次に、自分の好きな花を選んでカットし、プロに教わりながら花束を束ねる。

畑には、ダリアを始めとするこの季節に咲く美しい花たちが、自由にたくましく咲いていました。何週かかるかわからないけれど、four peas flowerさんの畑で咲いているお花を毎週一つずつ紹介していきたいと思うほど、どの花ものびのびと自然に存在していて、素晴らしかったです。

今回その中でも私がとても気になったのは、ハゼランです。

ハゼランは、漢字で「爆蘭」と書きます。膨らんだつぼみが次々とはぜる（爆ぜる）ように開くところから、あるいは花序の様子が線香花火のように見えるところからついた名前だとか。
蘭ではないのですが、見た目が蘭のよう、ということでしょうか。正直あまり蘭ぽい感じはしませんが、一歩譲って蘭だとしても、これは極小マイクロ蘭ですね。花の大きさはたった５ミリ程度ですから。これって、蘭ではないのに、きれいな花には「〇〇ラン」とつけたがる日本人心なのかなぁ？（例えばスズラン、クンシランなど）

別名、「三時草」。午後３時に花が開き、開花しているのはほんの１、２時間だけ。先月半ばのブログでは、Four O’clockという英名を持つオシロイバナ
の開花時間について書きましたが、今度は３時か！笑、と思ってこの別名を教えてくれた花農家さんの話を面白おかしく聞いていました。もしかしたら、８時草とか１１時柳なんていう植物も存在したりして！？なんて。笑

ハゼランは、熱帯アメリカ原産。
日本には明治時代にやってきました。繁殖力も強く、自然に野生化して今では日本中で見られる植物です。コンクリートの隙間や日の当たらない街路樹の下、ガードレールの脇などあらゆるところに生息しています。

面白いのが、食としての実力。
ハゼランはスーパーフードとして注目されているそうです。調べてみたら、ビタミンA、ビタミンC、ビタミンKなどの必須ビタミンがとても多いことに加え、カルシウム、カリウム、マグネシウムなどの重要なミネラルも豊富で、葉を生食でサラダにしたり、炒めたり蒸したりなど加熱しても美味しくいただけるそうです。炒めてさっと塩胡椒していた人の動画を観ましたが、お味はまるでほうれん草とのこと。

これは、面白い！身近なところで食用目的の植物ハンティングをしてみるのも楽しそうですね。家で育てるのも良いかも。ハゼランは益虫を呼ぶらしく、なんせ手間もかからずほったらかしで育つので、どこかで見かけた
ら、種を採って自宅の植木鉢に撒いてみるのも気軽にできそう。
種は、上の写真の、花ではなくて丸い粒になっている部分にぎっしり詰まっています。

花言葉は、「身軽」。
いいですね〜！どこまでも身軽に、自由に、線香花火のように弾けて行きたいものですね！

息子のハンドボールの試合を初めて観に行ってきました。試合は負けちゃったけど、面白かった！はるか昔、バスケットボールをやっていたこともあったので、一歩多く歩けるハンドボールのルールに慣れなくて、トラベリングか？！と無駄にヒヤヒヤしながら笑、楽しく応援してきました。

Last Sunday, I woke up at 5 AM and visited Four Peas Flower, a flower farm in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

"I must wake up early, I can't be late!"
With this determination, I went to bed earlier than usual and closed my eyes. But between my son excitedly watching a soccer match online and cheering, and our rabbit, Mame-chan, pulling on my hair for attention, I didn’t get much sleep. Still, I managed to get up on time.

When I arrived at Fujino Station with a foggy head, I noticed something different about the air. It was hot, but not the suffocating heat of the city. It was the kind of air that makes you want to take a deep breath!

As I looked around, the lush green summer mountains surrounded me. Just seeing them opened my eyes wide, and suddenly, I felt excited. Nature’s impact on people is truly amazing, isn’t it?

The purpose of this visit to the flower farm was to "learn about flower cultivation and create a bouquet with the flowers we harvested ourselves." This was part of a sustainable tourism project by JTB, and it was a highly satisfying experience. In about three hours during the morning, we had a very enriching time. We listened to the flower farmer (Satoko-san from Four Peas Flower), toured the fields, experienced flower cultivation (this time, we supported dahlia plants that had been knocked over by a typhoon, staked them, pruned damaged flowers, and kept the good ones). This allowed us to get a sense of the hard work that goes into getting flowers ready for shipment (even if it was just a small part). Then, we selected our favorite flowers, cut them, and made bouquets with guidance from a professional.

In the fields, beautiful flowers like dahlias were blooming freely and vigorously. The flowers were so naturally and wonderfully present that I felt like introducing one from Four Peas Flower's fields every week, though I’m not sure how long it would take to go through them all.
Among them, the one that particularly caught my eye was the Hazeran.

Hazeran, written as "爆蘭" in kanji, means "exploding orchid." The name comes from the way the swollen buds burst open one after another or because the flower clusters resemble sparklers.
Although it isn’t an orchid, the name might come from its orchid-like appearance. To be honest, it doesn’t really look like an orchid to me, but if we generously consider it an orchid, this would be a micro-orchid as the flowers are only about 5mm in size. It makes me wonder if it's a Japanese trait to want to name pretty flowers with “-ran” (orchid), like with lily of the valley (suzuran) or clivia (kunshiran).

Another name for Hazeran is "Three O’clock Flower." It opens at 3 PM and only blooms for about 1 or 2 hours. In mid-July’s newsletter, I wrote about the Four O’clock Flower (Mirabilis jalapa), and now we have a 3 o’clock one! I chuckled as I listened to the flower farmer explain this funny alternate name. I joked that maybe there are also plants called "Eight O’clock Grass" or "Eleven O’clock Willow!"

Hazeran originates from tropical America and came to Japan during the Meiji era. It has a strong ability to reproduce and has become naturalized, so it can now be found all over Japan, thriving in various places like cracks in concrete, under shade trees along the streets, and beside guardrails.
What’s interesting is its potential as food. Hazeran is gaining attention as a superfood. After some research, I found that it’s rich in essential vitamins like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K, as well as important minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium. The leaves can be eaten raw in salads or cooked by sautéing or steaming, and they’re delicious either way. I watched a video of someone sautéing the leaves with just a little salt and pepper, and they said it tasted like spinach.

This is fascinating! It seems like it would be fun to hunt for edible plants in your surroundings, or maybe even grow them at home. Hazeran is said to attract beneficial insects, and it’s easy to grow with little care, so if you see one somewhere, you could collect the seeds and plant them in a pot at home. The seeds are packed into the round, bead-like part of the plant, not the flowers in the photos above.

The flower’s meaning is "lightness." That’s wonderful! It makes me want to live freely and lightly, bursting like a sparkler!

I went to watch my son’s handball match for the first time. They lost the game, but it was fun! I used to play basketball long ago, so I was a bit anxious about the handball rule that allows an extra step, thinking it might be traveling. But I enjoyed cheering them on with a smile.
