カヤツリグサで、恋占い
先週お伝えした無農薬露地栽培の花農家さんのお花たち、まだまだ元気な子がいます。今日はその中でも面白い名前の植物をご紹介します。
花農家さんで摘んだお花たちでブーケを作った時に、異色を放っていたのが、カヤツリグサ（蚊帳吊草）。
形状が面白く、野の花ブーケにぴったりのアクセントになっていました。
オシャレなナチュラルブーケにも映えるこの草は、一般的には「雑草」と言われている部類です。なんとまあ、カヤツリグサたちにとっては失礼な話です。そろそろ人間都合なネーミングはやめて、「雑草」っていうワードを無くしたらどうかしらね。
カヤツリグサの名前は、昔からの子どもの遊びに由来します。茎を引き裂いて四角形を作る遊びがあり、その形が蚊帳を吊った形に似ているところから、カヤツリグサという名前がついたそうです。沖縄以外の全国に自生していて、１メートルを超える大型のものから数センチの小さなものまで、４０
種類くらいの様々な近縁種が存在しています。
息子に手伝ってもらって、さっそく茎を両端から割いてみました。
できた！と喜んだけど、あれ、なんか違うぞ。笑
一本ぴょんと飛び出ているし、四角も無理やり作っているし笑。
なかなかに難しいのは、間違いない。
好きな人と両端を持って茎を割き、蚊帳作りに成功すると両想いになれるとか？っていう話も。

さて、カヤツリグサを調べていくと、とにかく見た目もさまざまなタイプがあることが分かりました。先週のメルマガ主役のハゼラン同様、道端に普通に生えているので、またしてもあっちふらふらこっちふらふらしながら歩くこと間違いなし。笑
今回息子と蚊帳作りに挑戦したときに気づいたのですが、茎の形が三角柱！三角形のお箸や鉛筆は見たことがある人も多いでしょうけれど、植物の茎が三角形とは、珍しくないですか？面白いですよね。
カヤツリグサの遊びも、この三面の茎の違う部分をうまく割くことで四角形を作れる、というわけですが、そもそも茎が三角形であるメリットって何なんだろう？
角をもった三角形の茎のメリットは、茎が曲げられた時に、耐える強さが円形の茎よりも強い、ということらしいです。逆に、円形の茎（通常はこのタイプが多いですよね）は、風がどの方向から吹いてきても圧を逃すことができる、という利点があるそうです。
植物っておもしろい！！
さて、雑草扱いされているカヤツリグサに花言葉はあるのでしょうか。
ちゃんと立派な花言葉がありました。
それは、「伝統」。
カヤツリグサの遊びも、後世に伝えて行きたいですね。

夏休み最終週、宿題が終わっていないうちの息子のような子にとっては、追い込みウィーク。台風の被害が少なく済みますように、と願いつつ、自宅にこもって仕事をする予定です。ストレスを感じないためにも、決して息子の部屋を覗かないようにせねば。笑
As mentioned in last week the flowers from the pesticide-free, open-field flower farm are still going strong. Today, we would like to introduce an interestingly named plant from that selection.
[Ichirin's Floral Note 🌸 Predicting Love with Cyperus ( "Kaya" - Mosquito Net Grass )]
One flower that stood out when we created a bouquet from the flowers picked at the flower farm was Cyperus, also known as "Mosquito Net Grass."
With its unique shape, it added the perfect accent to a wildflower bouquet.
While this grass also complements stylish, natural bouquets, it is generally classified as a “weed.” What a rude label for the Cyperus! Perhaps it’s time to stop naming plants based on human convenience and do away with the term “weed” altogether.
The name “Kayatsurigusa” comes from a traditional children's game. The game involves tearing the stem to form a square shape, resembling a mosquito net, hence the name "Mosquito Net Grass." It grows all over Japan except Okinawa, and there are about 40 varieties, ranging from large ones over a meter tall to small ones just a few centimeters high.
With my son's help, we tried splitting the stem from both ends.
We made it! But wait… something seems off. Haha. One part is sticking out, and the square shape looks a bit forced!
It’s definitely not easy. There’s even a saying that if you and the person you like each hold one end of the stem and successfully make a mosquito net together, you’ll become a couple!

As I researched more about Cyperus, I discovered that it comes in a variety of appearances. Like Hazeran, the star of last week’s newsletter, it grows naturally along the roadside, so I’ll likely find myself wandering aimlessly again. Haha!
When my son and I attempted to make the mosquito net, we noticed that the stem is triangular! While many people may have seen triangular chopsticks or pencils, isn’t it unusual for a plant stem to be triangular? It’s fascinating! The game with Cyperus involves making a square by cleverly splitting different parts of its three-sided stem. But what advantage does having a triangular stem offer?
Apparently, the advantage of a triangular stem is that it is stronger against bending compared to a round stem. Conversely, a round stem (which is more common) can better disperse pressure from wind blowing in any direction.
Plants are truly interesting!
Now, does Cyperus, often regarded as a weed, have a flower meaning? Indeed, it does. Its meaning is “tradition.”
We should certainly continue passing down the tradition of playing with Cyperus.

In the final week of summer vacation, it’s crunch time for kids like my son, who haven't finished their homework. I plan to stay home and work, hoping the typhoon causes minimal damage. To avoid stress, I must refrain from peeking into my son's room. Haha!
