アジサイは日本原産のジャパニーズビューティー

梅雨空と、むうっとするような湿気。雨が降っていなくてもどんよりとした鉛色の空に、気持ちが滅入るような日もありますよね。そんなあなたにお届けしたいのが、紫陽花の花景色です。

アジサイ（紫陽花）は、梅雨の時期の代表花です。雨にしっとり濡れる姿が、この時期の風景を格別なものにしてくれます。これほど梅雨に似合う花は無いのでは、と思うほど。

日本原産のアジサイ。子どもの頃から漢字で書く「紫陽花」の文字が妙に好きでした。語源をたどると、古くは万葉集までさかのぼりますが、諸説ある中でも、「藍色が集まったもの」を意味する「集真藍（あづさあい／あづさい）」がなまったものとする説が有力です。

巷に聞く「西洋アジサイ」が、よく見かけるタイプのアジサイです。

日本原産のガクアジサイをドイツ人の医師、シーボルトが持ち帰り、その後ヨーロッパ各地で品種改良を重ねたものが日本に逆輸入されました。
ガクアジサイとは、下の写真のような、真ん中の丸い花序の周りを装飾花がぐるっと囲むタイプ。まさに額縁のよう。

逆輸入されたアジサイたちは品種改良が重ねられ、花色や形のバリエーションも豊富に。青、青紫、ラベンダー、紫、赤紫、ピンク、赤、白、緑、そして２色になっているもの、咲き進むにつれてグラデーションに色が変化するもの、等々、とにかく種類がたくさんあることも、紫陽花ファンが多い理由です。
形も様々なものがあります。一重もあれば八重もあり、最近では萼片が星のような形のものや逆に丸いものなどもあり、新種の開発に拍車がかかっている感じがしますね。

来月末〜８月頭にかけて、アジサイでリースを作るワークショップを開催する予定です（詳細はまたメルマガ番外編にて近日中にお知らせしますね！）。
アジサイは、きれいなドライフラワーになるタイプのものがあり、今回のワークショップは、ドライにしたばかりのアジサイを使う予定です。実は、アジサイは、ドライフラワーになった時の方が良い香りがするんですよ🎵（って、また香りフェチ発言してます笑）

花色は、土壌の酸性度に影響されます。酸性が強い土壌だと青色に、アルカリ性が強い土壌だと赤色になります。青色に仕立てたければ、土に過リン酸石灰や硫安を、赤色がお望みなら消石灰や苦土石灰を施すと良いと言われています。

アジサイの花言葉は、「移り気」。
長く咲いている間に花色が変化するところからついたのでしょう。
また、色ごとの花言葉もあります。
「青＝辛抱強い愛情」「ピンク＝元気な女性」「白＝寛容」。

誰かにプレゼントをするときや、メッセージを伝えたいときに、色
に注目して選ぶのも良いかもしれませんね。

The rainy season brings a gloomy sky and oppressive humidity. Even on days without rain, the leaden sky can be quite depressing. On such days, I want to share the beauty of hydrangeas with you.

Hydrangeas (Ajisai) are the quintessential flower of the rainy season. Their appearance, glistening with rain, makes the scenery of this time of year exceptional. There may be no other flower that suits the rainy season as perfectly as the hydrangea.

The hydrangea is native to Japan. Since childhood, I have always been fond of the characters for "紫陽花" (Ajisai). Tracing its origins back to the Man'yōshū, one theory suggests that the name derives from "集真藍" (Azusa-ai), meaning "a collection of indigo colors."
The commonly seen "Western Hydrangea" is the type of hydrangea most people are familiar with.

A German physician, Philipp Franz von Siebold, took the native Japanese Gaku-ajisai back to Europe, where it was further cultivated and then reintroduced to Japan. Gaku-ajisai, as shown in the photo below, is a type with decorative flowers surrounding a central cluster, resembling a picture frame.

The reimported hydrangeas have been extensively bred, resulting in a wide variety of flower colors and shapes. Blue, blue-purple, lavender, purple, red-purple, pink, red, white, green, two-tone, and even those that change color in a gradient as they bloom—there are many types, which is why hydrangea fans are so numerous. The shapes are also diverse, with single and double flowers, and recently, there are varieties with star-shaped or rounded sepals, suggesting that the development of new types is accelerating.

At the end of next month through early August, I plan to hold a workshop to make wreaths with hydrangeas (details will be announced in a special edition of the newsletter soon!). Some hydrangeas make beautiful dried flowers, and this workshop will use freshly dried hydrangeas. Did you know that hydrangeas actually smell better when dried? 🎵 (Yes, I’m making another scent-lover comment. LOL)

The color of hydrangea flowers is affected by soil acidity. Acidic soil produces blue flowers, while alkaline soil results in red flowers. To achieve blue flowers, it is recommended to add superphosphate of lime or ammonium sulfate to the soil. For red flowers, use slaked lime or magnesia lime.

The flower language of the hydrangea is "fickleness," likely because the flower color changes over time. Additionally, each color has its own meaning: "Blue = patient love," "Pink = energetic woman," and "White = tolerance."
When giving a gift or sending a message, choosing by color might be a lovely idea.
