意見はあるのに英語で言えない...を振り返る | 30代のアメリカ生活
英語で会話している中で、日本の文化や歴史について聞かれたり、政治や国際的な問題について意見を聞かれたりするすることがあります。
そもそもアメリカに住んでいる日本人以外の方々（中でも特にインターナショナルと関係を築いている方かも）は自国の歴史や文化についてはもちろん、日本についてもそんなことまで知ってるの？！わたしより詳しいんじゃ？ということもよくあるほどで驚かされることが度々あり、そんな人たちと会話をしていると日本人であるわたしは当然日本について聞かれることも多いわけです。
わたしの英語レベルは「日常生活は困らない、自分の興味のある分野や知識のある分野についてはある程度長い説明や議論ができる」程度で、ボキャブラリーもそういった範囲に限られてしまっているため、難しい話題、普段自分からは言及しない話題になると途端に話せなくなってしまい、日本語だったらたくさん言えることあるのに…英語でうまく伝えられなくて悔しい…という思いをすることがよくあります。
そんな悔しい思いをここで振り返って次回に活かそうと思います。わりと話題になることも多いトピックじゃないかなと思うので、よろしければ参考にしてみてください。

1. 日本の宗教や信仰ってどんな感じ？
普通に生活する上ではそれほど話題になることはないかもしれませんが、国際交流、文化交流のような場に行くとそこそこ多い話題なのではないかと思います。
日本の宗教観ってなかなか説明するのが難しいとも思うのですが、これまでもたびたび機会はあったので、わたしの考えでは「こうだよ」という説明を持っています。
徐々に英語でも説明できるようになってきてはいたのですが、やっぱり100%伝えたいことは伝えられないまま今まで来てしまったことを反省し、改めて英語にしてみました。
There are two major religions in Japan. The first one is Shintoism and the second one is Buddhism. Shintoism is very traditional religion in Japan. The main faith of the Shinto is a view of nature that "God resides in all things." Buddhism is came from India through China and it spread out in Japan long time ago.
Many Japanese have their religion as their family's faith. A funeral would be hold based on that religion. However, the actual situation for most Japanese are different. In my opinion, most Japanese including me have a similar idea to "spiritual but not religious."
We don't have strong faith in our daily life basis, but we go to a shrine on new years day or when we have something to pray for such as success in an exam or safe childbirth. We are also educated we must not left even single grain of rice since there are seven gods in single grain of rice. Rice is just an example, but nature is respected and also feared. I would say this feeling is coming from the faith of "God resides in all things."
あまり長くなっても、ということで短めにまとめました。
アメリカで近年「SBNR（spiritual but not religious）」または「SBNA（spiritual but not affiliated）」という考え方が注目されていますが、日本の信仰や文化はもともとSBNR的な価値観なのではと思っています。
2. 日本人はもっと英語を勉強するべきだと思う？
これは英語が難しかった！というより、言いたいことがたくさんあって、でもそれを考えながら英語で伝える難しかったという感じです。
In my personal opinion, I think Japanese must study English more and improve average English level in Japan.
Actually, I can understand why English level of Japan is very low and Japanese doesn't have a passion to study English.
So far Japan has good economy, positions to work, good education, and enough entertainment. Also Japanese are dedicated, diligent and punctual, so the society is well organized, clean, and safe. For most Japanese, Japan is very comfortable place to live, so they don't want to or need to go outside of Japan. That is why they didn't need to learn English.
However, I think it may not continue in future in long term perspective. Nowadays Japanese currency is very weak and society is getting vulnerable. If we Japanese want to keep our country same as before, comfortable, safe and developed, I think we need to learn English.
At first, since English is the global standard language, we can communicate with much more people and can access much more information if we can understand English. Japanese is spoken only in Japan and the population is only 1.5% in the world. If we want to access the very newest information of technology, science, or so, we need English.
Secondly, because of the fact that the English level of Japan is very limited, Japan is loosing the chance to get the great human resources from the world.
I have a friend who loves Japan so much and desires to work in Japan. He graduated one of the best graduate school in his country and speak a little Japanese. He applied to Japanese companies after his graduation but he couldn't get the job because his Japanese was not business level, though he speak English very well. If Japanese companies hire only people who speak Japanese, people have a great skill or knowledge do not want to work in Japan.
最後のほうは友人に対する思いがあふれていますが、こんな感じでしょうか。彼が今後も日本で働きたいという気持ちを持ち続けてくれること、そして日本で働いてくれる日が来ることを切に祈ります。
3. 日本の有名なリーダーについて教えて
これは初めての話題でした。これについてはまずあまり日本語でも話したことがないような気がします。
「有名な」にはいろいろあると思いますが、わたしは安倍首相について、日本でいかに衝撃的な事件だったのか話すことに。

In recent years, I would say former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is one of the most remarkable leader in Japan. He was the Prime Minister 3 terms ago. He had a strong leadership and had a good diplomatic skills, so that he had the longest tenure in office after Japan started constitutional government.
He was a remarkable politician as himself is, but sadly there is one more reason that he is remembered by people. He was shot and killed by a man in the middle of his speech in front of a lot of people. It was truly shocking for us because such attack was rare occasion in Japan. Murder of Prime Ministers or former Prime Ministers was never happened for nearly 100 years. Even the use of a gun is very rare in Japan. He never deserved to killed by someone in such attack.
I hope such incident will never happen again.
こうして落ち着いて文章を書くのでもかなり時間がかかってしまいました…
でも、こうして英語で言えなかったあれ、本当はなんて言うのかなを振り返って積み上げていくことで語彙や言い回しが身についていくんじゃないかと。だんだんスムーズになりますように。
またトピックがいくつか貯まったらこうして振り返りをしようかなと思います。
