放送作家を夢見て、ひたちなか市から上京した一人の青年がいた。ヤンチャな10代を過ごし、母親に大いに苦労をかけた彼は、出世して母親に親孝行をすべく、都会の荒波と戦う日々を送っていた。
そんな青年の元に驚愕のニュースが舞い込んでくる。地元茨城が大災害に見舞われたというのだ。駆けつけようにも交通網は寸断され、電話すらも通じない。
「母ちゃん！母ちゃんは無事なのか!?」途方に暮れる青年の前に、電車とも猫ともつかない姿をした巨大な怪獣が現れた。自分に乗れ、というような仕草を見せる怪獣。その中には、青年と同じように夢を追って各地に散らばったひたちなか市の若者たちの姿があった…。
二日後、瓦礫の下から奇跡的に救助された青年の母親の記事が、茨城新聞の一面を飾る。倒壊した家の下敷きとなり意識が遠のく中、巨大な猫に乗った息子が助けに来てくれたのを微かに覚えているという。人々は夢だろうと言ったが、母親の手には上京する息子に持たせたはずの、酒列磯前神社のお守りが握られていた。
