英語を学び直したい人のための『ちょいと使える英語 Vol.21』

しばらくぶりに、思い出したように配信する『ちょいと使える英語』。。
今回のテーマは「梅雨」です。

（関東地方は今日、梅雨入りしました）

The weather agency announced the rainy season has started today in the Kanto district.
（気象庁は、関東地方が今日、梅雨入りしたと発表しました）

According to the weather agency, the rainy season has started today in the Kanto district.
（気象庁によれば、関東地方は今日、梅雨入りしました）

気象庁は、 正式には“Meteorological Agency”と言いますが、長くて覚えづらいので、weather agencyでもOKです。
“According to～”は「～によれば」ですね。

According to Yahoo News, Ozeki Aasanoyama will be suspended from six Sumo tournaments.
　（Yahooニュースによれば、大関朝乃山は6場所出場停止になった）

話を梅雨に戻します。
All regions except Hokkaido are in the rainy season from June to mid-July.
　（北海道を除く地方は、6月から7月半ばにかけて梅雨入りします）

It is very humid in the rainy season. To be honest, it is uncomfortable.
（梅雨は湿気がひどいです。正直言って不快ですね）

We will have less rain in this rainy season than usual.
（今年の梅雨は例年より雨が少ないでしょう）

We’ve had many gloomy days since last week.
（先週からうっとうしい日々が続いています）　“gloomy”は「憂鬱な」「暗い」という意味です。

いかがでしたでしょうか？
早く “The rainy season finally ended.”（やっと梅雨が明けた）と言いたいですね。
“I’m longing for summer.” “I’m looking forward to summer.”（夏を心待ちにしています）

ちなみに「ツユ」という単語は、英語を母国語にする人にとっては発音しづらいようです。日本語の「ツ」の発音で始まる単語はあまりないので、「つーゆっ」という感じでちょっと難しいようです。
