Translation Studies Diary of 30 September, 2024
I arrived in Cardiff, UK, on 20 September.
It was cold, with a temperature difference of about 10 degrees Celsius from Japan.
There seems to be no doubt that it rains a lot, but my impression is that the weather changes more frequently in a day than that there is a lot of precipitation.
I am doing a master's degree in translation studies at Cardiff University and today I had my first lecture.
It was about translation theory.
We discussed the phenomena surrounding translators.
Some key words were invoked.
-Untranslatability
-Formality
-Transparancy
-What is the same?
I felt that I needed to develop a deeper level of knowledge about translation.
It is not research if I just end up asking the question, ‘Do both reading in English and Japanese lead to the same experience?’
As a goal, I would like to establish a philosophy based on the recognition that language identity is ambiguous.
I believe that only translation studies can solve this problem.
We need to question different aspects of language.
