A book summery 3 "The boy who lost his face"

I read a book titled "The boy who lost his face" written by Louis Sachar.

The main character David was trying to fit in at school, but his best friend Scott decided that David was no longer cool enough to hang out with. Instead, Scott was taken up with the coolest, yet meanest boys in the same year and he was keeping up with them. In order to be accepted by the group, David went along with a cruel trick played on an old lady who lived alone.

David didn't want to play the trick on her, but he wanted to be with Scott and the group at the same time.

They went into the lady's garden and stole her cane from her. When they ran away, David was the last one to escape. When he went out, the lady said something to David, but he didn't understand what she said. After leaving her behind, David was full of sense of guilt. He wondered what she said ,and later, he thought her words were a curse. He was trying to visit and apologize to her, but he was too scared to do it.

After this incident, some bad things happened to him. For example, he broke his window by mistake, or he entered his classroom unzipped. He regarded there were the old lady's curse.

Finally, he visited her and apologized and begged her to lift the curse on him. She didn't know what the curse meant but she forgave him. She told David that if the person had a sense of quilt, he would think the bad things which happened on him were the punishment. If nothing happened, then he would punish himself.

After reading this story, I thought that her words were thoughtful. It's important to get rid of the sense of quilt by saying sorry.
