上原ひろみ女史は日本で初めてグラミー賞を受賞したジャズピアニスト・作曲家です。超絶テクニック、エネルギッシュなライブパフォーマンスで知られ、グラミー賞を受賞、世界中の様々なジャンルの音楽家と共演しています。
Ms. Hiromi Uehara is thefirst Japanese jazz and composer awarded 'Grammy'. Renowned for her extraordinary technique and energetic live performances, she has collaborated with musicians from various genres worldwide.
「ハノンをスウィングして弾いてみたら？」
ひろみは母のすすめで6歳よりヤマハ音楽教室に通ってピアノを始めます。ピアノの基礎練習ハノンに眠くなるひろみに、ジャズ好きの疋田範子先生は「ハノンをスウィングして弾いてみたら」。自分で和音をつけたりして遊ぶようになります。さらに五線譜の上にじょうずにオタマジャクシを載せるようにして毎週1曲ずつ作曲を始めます。小学校の音楽会では音楽室の楽器をクラスメイトに振り分けてみんなを猛特訓、組曲「踊るポンポコリン」三部作をプロデュースします。高校時代は、エントランスホールに置かれたグランドピアノを独占。ホールに集まる友達のために即興でBGMをつけるように弾きます。
「セッションしよう！」
来る日も来る日もピアノを弾き続け、17歳のときに東京のヤマハまでレッスンを受けにいった先で、ひろみは同じビルのスタジオで翌日のコンサートのリハーサルをしているチック・コリアを見つけます。早速、スタジオに押しかけてオリジナル曲を披露。「じゃあ、即興しよう」スタジオにあった2台のピアノでセッション演奏をはじめます。そのまま翌日の彼のコンサートに誘われ、大手町の日経ホールで、聴衆の前で披露します。高校卒業後は大学に通いながらライブ活動を始めます。知人に誘われＣＭ音楽を作るようになると、いろんな楽器について勉強するために大学を中退して渡米します。
「音楽で大冒険」
ひろみはマサチューセッツ州ボストンのバークリー音楽大学でピアノを弾きながら作曲を猛勉強。英語がほとんど話せないひろみはピアノが弾けると友達ができるということを実感。世界中から集まってきた国籍も肌の色も違う人たちと24時間音楽漬けで過ごします。卒業試験の課題として提出した曲を作編曲科の先生が絶賛。ジャズピアニストであるアーマッド・ジャマルの紹介を受け、ジャズの名門レコード会社「テラーク」からアルバム『Another Mind』で世界デビューします。さらに再会したチック・コリアとアルバム『Ｄｕｅｔ』を発表、ソロ・ピアノ作品『Place to Be』をリリース。2011年にはスタンリー・クラークとのプロジェクト作『スタンリー・クラーク・バンド フィーチャリング 上原ひろみ』で第53回グラミー賞にて「ベスト・コンテンポラリー・ジャズ・アルバム」を受賞。その後も世界中の新たな仲間たちとピアノを弾き続けています。
"Swing Hanon"
At the age of six, Hiromi started learning the piano at the Yamaha Music School, following her mother's recommendation. Faced with drowsiness during the foundational piano exercises of Hanon, Hiromi caught the attention of her jazz enthusiast teacher, Noriko Hikita. Hikita suggested, "Why not try playing Hanon with a swing?" This led Hiromi to experiment with adding her own chords, transforming the routine into a playful endeavor. Further, she began composing one piece per week, skillfully placing tadpoles on the musical staff. For the elementary school music concert, Hiromi took charge, allocating instruments to her classmates in the music room and putting everyone through rigorous training to produce the three-part suite "Dancing Ponpokolin." In high school, Hiromi claimed the grand piano stationed in the entrance hall. There, she spontaneously played background music for her friends gathered in the hall.
"Let's have a session!"
Continuing to play the piano day after day, Hiromi, at the age of 17, attended a lesson at Yamaha in Tokyo and stumbled upon Chick Corea rehearsing for the next day's concert in the same building's studio. Without hesitation, she entered the studio and showcased her original piece. "Well then, let's improvise." They initiated a session performance on the two pianos in the studio. Subsequently invited to his concert the next day, she performed at the Nihonbashi Nikkei Hall in front of the audience. Following high school, while attending university, she embarked on her live performance journey. Invited by an acquaintance to compose commercial music, she decided to drop out of university and study various instruments, eventually traveling to the United States.
"Sonicwonderland"
Studying composition intensively at Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts, Hiromi continued playing the piano. Despite her limited proficiency in English, she realized that playing the piano facilitated making friends. Immersed in a 24-hour musical environment, she spent her time surrounded by people from various countries and diverse backgrounds. Her composition, submitted as a graduation exam, received praise from the arranging and composition teacher. Introduced to jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Hiromi made her world debut with the album 'Another Mind' from the prestigious jazz record label "Verve." Reuniting with Chick Corea, she released the album 'Duet' and the solo piano piece 'Place to Be.' In 2011, she won the "Best Contemporary Jazz Album" at the 53rd Grammy Awards with the project album 'Stanley Clarke Band featuring Hiromi,' a collaboration with Stanley Clarke. Since then, she has continued to play the piano with new friends from around the world.
