December in Kyoto: Wrote New Year's Cards?
December in Kyoto 2023
From December 15th, New Year's card reception has begun at post offices nationwide in Japan. At each office, preparations are made to ensure that the cards reach each household on the morning of New Year's Day. Families celebrate the New Year by eating ozōni (a traditional soup) and eagerly await the arrival of New Year's cards in their mailboxes.
Is this now considered as one of the past tradition?
Once a year, people used to use the occasion to apologize for their lack of communication to relatives, old classmates and colleagues, and write about their New Year's resolutions, all handwritten with a calligraphy brush on small postcards with illustlation of the zodiac animal of that year.
Starting next year, postal rates will also increase:
・Postcard: JPY63 → JPY85
・Sealed Letter: JPY84 → JPY110
Should I respond to the New Year's cards I receive only, or use LINE?
