年末といえば「第九」 Beethoven Ninth

まるで年末の風物詩
It's like a year-end tradition

日本では第二次世界大戦後の
After World War II in Japan

1947年（昭和22年）に
In 1947 (Showa 22)

日本交響楽団（今のNHK交響楽団）が
The Japanese Symphony Orchestra

12月に3日間連続で演奏し
Performed for 3 consecutive days in December

絶賛されたのが始まりなんだとか
It ’s the beginning that was praised

戦後の混乱期に
In the postwar turmoil

オーケストラにとっては
For the orchestra

安心して年を迎える為の
To welcome the year with peace of mind

臨時収入だったんだって
It was extra income

ベートーヴェンは
Beethoven

この曲を書き上げた時には
When I wrote this song

ほとんど耳は聴こえませんでした
He was almost deaf

今でも愛される
Still loved

こんなに素晴らしい曲を
Such a wonderful song

自らは聴くことはなかった
He didn't listen to it himself.

私が今の楽団を希望した
I wanted the current orchestra.

もうひとつの理由は
Another reason

年末に第九を演奏する
Play the ninth at the end of the year

楽団だったから
Because it was an orchestra

私たちの楽団も　
Our orchestra too

けっこうな助成金が出てるって言ってた
I got a considerable subsidy.

活動を維持する収入源なのだ〜
It ’s a source of income for us to stay active.
