【通訳案内士】Shunbun-no-hi 春分の日

2020年3月20日は春分の日です。「春分の日って何をする日なの？」と外国の人に聞かれると、「何をする日なんだろう？」となってしまうかもしれません（自分もそうでした）。春分の日について書いてみたいと思います。

Shunbun-no-hi 春分の日

In Japan, 20th or 21st of March is regarded as “Shunbun-no-hi”. There is no definition about the date, so each year the day may change to 20th or 21st. It is the day that duration of daytime and nighttime is almost equal. In Japanese law, this day is for people to appreciate nature and all living beings.
日本では3月20日か21日は春分の日とされています。20日か21日かというのは厳密な定義がなく、年によって日が変わります。この日は太陽の出ている時間と沈んでいる時間がほぼ同じです。法律ではこの日を「自然をたたえ、生物をいつくしむ。」という事を趣旨としています。

Originally, people celebrate imperial events on this day, but nowadays they are only celebrated in the imperial palace. Japanese have customs on respecting ancestors around this season. It is called “Higan” and it is in spring and autumn. We usually go to cemetery and clean ancestor’s grave and offer flowers and things that deceased loved during their lifetime.　The day may have a special meaning from long time ago, because duration daytime and nighttime is same.
もともとは宮中の行事がある日で、この日に先祖を祭るという習慣があります。日本には”彼岸”と呼ばれる先祖を祭る時期が春と秋の２回あり、この時期に先祖の墓参りに行き、花を供えたり故人が生前好きだったものなどをお供えします。日が出ている時間と沈んでいる時間が同じである事は昔から特別な意味を持っていたのかもしれません。

In Japan there is a word like “Atusa samusa mo higan made”, and it means severe hot days may end around higan in autumn, and unpleasant cold days also end around higan in spring. It is a season for us to stay comfortable, and you can notice some seasonal changes. You can see cherry blossoms blooming and hear the insects’ sounds. Please find your spring favorite activities during your stay in Japan.
“暑さ寒さも彼岸まで”と言う言葉があります。秋の彼岸は暑い夏が終わり、だんだん涼しくなるという意味で、春の彼岸は冬がようやく終わり暖かくなってくるという指標になります。春らしくなってくる時期であり、桜の開花や虫の声など、春の気配を感じてみてください。
