Geisha 芸者

I would like to talk about Geishas.
Geisha literally means artists or entertainers.
They play traditional Japanese music instruments, dance Japanese traditional dance, sing, etc.
芸者について話したいと思います。
芸者とはアーティストやエンターテイナーの事を指します。
主に日本の楽器を弾いたり、舞を踊ったり、唄を歌ったりする人の事です。

To master these skills, geisha practice from a younger age.
They will start their career at around 15 years old, and during this apprenticeship, they are called “Maiko”.
If they mastered these skills, they will become Geisha and it will take more than 5 years.
You can distinguish Maiko from Geisha by watching the length of sash.
Maiko wears longer sash than Geisha.
これらをマスターするために、芸者は小さい時から稽古をします。
15歳くらいからスタートしますが、見習いの期間は舞妓といいます。
20歳ぐらいで芸者になります。
舞妓と芸者は着物の帯の長さで判断することができます。
舞妓が長くだらりとした帯を付けています。

Formerly, there used to be a lot of Geishas in local area, but the number is getting decreased.
Even though, some local governments make efforts to preserve this tradition.
In Ito area at Shizuoka prefecture, there is a facility called Banquet Culture University where people can experience Geisha tradition.
In Kyoto, Geisha culture was inherited strongly, therefore tourist can find Geisha easily in the city.
There is a facility called “Gion corner” and tourist can watch the dance of Geisha and Maiko.
昔は地方にも多くの芸者がいましたが、その数はだんだんと減っています。
それでも各地の伝統を残すために、いくつかの自治体は芸者を確保する努力をしています。
静岡の伊東ではお座敷文化大学というのがあり、芸者の体験をすることができます。
京都ではその伝統が強く引き継がれているために、町で芸者さんを見ることはまれではありません。
祇園コーナーというところに行けば、芸者や舞妓の舞を見ることができます。
