Dear candidates for the presidency
I am an ordinary citizen of Japan. Right now, I am watching the course of your country's election with a serious gaze.
Recently, Japan also held its own election, yet it is becoming increasingly difficult to foresee the direction this country is headed.
I believe that the world is facing the greatest crisis of this century.
Everywhere, violence and division are spreading rapidly. Small differences in opinion turn into disputes, leading to fruitless arguments that escalate into conflicts, and small conflicts grow into large-scale wars. Since the beginning of this century, how many precious lives have been lost?
The threat of nuclear war is no longer a mere nightmare but is becoming a reality. The doctrine of nuclear deterrence can no longer maintain peace. I can only pray that the conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine do not spread globally, leading to nuclear war.
Now, catastrophic damage from extreme weather is expanding worldwide. Abnormal weather has become the norm, and there is growing concern that upcoming crises related to food, water shortages, and energy may reach unimaginable scales.
Humanity has cleared forests, created farmland, and cultivated crops for centuries, yet these activities have sparked pandemics, which continue to inflict the pain of infectious diseases on an astonishing number of people.
While there are still many children who cannot even get enough daily calories, there are also children who, from a young age, suffer from obesity and lifestyle-related diseases. Inequality continues to widen, and humanity’s insatiable desires keep growing endlessly.
What is prosperity?
Is it worth pursuing prosperity at the cost of destroying nature, exhausting resources and energy, invading other countries, and taking countless precious lives?
I am worried.
What can we leave for the children of the future?
I am worried.
At this rate, does humanity even have a future?
I am worried.
Will humanity continue down this path of hatred, killing, and destruction of nature?
And yet, I have a dream.
A dream that one day, children around the world, despite differences in skin color, birthplace, gender, abilities, and ways of thinking, will care for one another and join hands in unity.
I have a dream that, one day, many children will be able to play among the insects in the forest, interact with animals, drink clear water, and live a life of gratitude for the modest blessings of nature.
I have a dream that one day, many children will no longer play war games or lose themselves in games on smartphones but instead form circles with friends, call out to each other, help one another, and enjoy sports and the arts together.
I have a dream that, one day, children around the world will live in a society rich in peace, free from discrimination and prejudice, under the watchful eyes of their parents, adults, and community.
The realization of these dreams depends on the choices we, the people of today, make.
Dear candidates for the presidency, no matter who wins, please join hands to build a world where people with different values can coexist, for the sake of the children of the future.
The world is watching you with serious eyes.
