海外で話したら喜ばれる日本のことを英語で話してみよう

ちょっと日本ツーな英語人から、聞かれる日本語がある。

私が、海外にいるとよく質問されたものが下記の単語。

これくらいは言えるようにしたいね：

"Endaka" （円高）：1ドル300-400円の時代からすると、90年代は円高だったからねぇ。よく聞かれました。

Endaka means "strong yen". Yen became too strong in the eighties (80s). Because of this, Japan went through the recession caused by strong yen, so that is why many know this term. These days, exchange rate of the yen is strongly influenced by global economy, so we need to monitor the world events in order to see how strong the yen will be in the future.

Endakaは「強い円」。日本円は80年代に上がりすぎて、しばらく景気後退があったため、この言葉が有名になった。近年は、円の為替レートは、世界経済に大きく影響を受けるため、どういうレートになるか世界のニュースをよく見ないとダメ。

"Shinkansen"（新幹線）：これは、小学生くらいのときから、今でも、よく聞かれます。

Shinkansen means bullet train. Literally, it moves fast like a bullet, but it has a pointy nose, so it looks like a real bullet if you look at it from the front. It has a maximum speed of 320 km per hour, and it continues to expand to date.

新幹線はブレット（＝弾）トレインという意味。文字通り弾のように速いが、実際に前から見ると弾のようにとんがった先端をしている。最高時速320キロ出せるが、今も路線は拡大し続けている。
