剣道の掛け声：2024年5月2日（木）

　京都市下京区から北区上賀茂の京都産業大学キャンパスまで，主に堀川通り（途中，東堀川通りを含む）を使って自転車で往復している。堀川北山の交差点を少し下がったところを，夕方，道路の左隅を自転車で南進していくと「ギャー」という大きな声でびっくりすることがよくある。私も最初に聞いたときは何の叫びの声かと気味が悪かった。

　堀川通り沿いにある京都府北警察署の建物からその「ギャー」という声が聞こえてくるのである。取り調べでもしているのかと，初めて聞いたときは変な想像もしてしまった。実は，建物の3階の部屋で警察の女性の職員が剣道の練習をしていて，その掛け声の「ヤー」という気合の入った声だったようである。剣道の練習も警察の仕事の一つなのだろう。大変なことだ。

Kendo Shouts：May 2nd(Thursday)

I commute by bicycle mainly from Shimogyo Ward in Kyoto City to Kyoto Sangyo University campus in Kamigamo, Kita Ward, primarily using Horikawa Street (including the eastern part, which is also called Higashi-Horikawa Street). Often in the evening, as I ride south on the left side of the road a little downhill from the Horikawa Kitayama intersection, I am startled by a loud "Gya!" It was unsettling the first time I heard it, wondering what kind of shout it was.

The source of this "Gya!" comes from the building of the Kyoto Prefectural North Police Station along Horikawa Street. At first, I even had strange thoughts, wondering if they were interrogating someone. However, it turns out that female police staff are practicing kendo in a room on the third floor of the building, and that spirited shout of "Ya!" is part of their kendo practice. Kendo practice seems to be one of the duties of the police as well. Quite something.
