北山時雨：2024年12月17日（火）

自転車で大学まで通勤していると，この時季，自転車のハンドルを握るジャケット（中綿，ザノースフェイス）の両腕あたりのところで，突然に「パサッ，パサッ，パサッ」と音を立て始めることがある。これは北山時雨（きたやましぐれ）が降り始めたときに，最初に気づく現象である。

　京都市の堀川通りを下京区から北進していき，一条戻り橋と清明神社前を通り過ぎ，淡交社ビルが角にある堀川紫明の交差点あたりで，北山時雨に打たれることがしばしばある。鴨川河川敷を自転車で走っていても同様の体験をすることができる。

　京都市北区には，たいへん眺望の良い場所として「船岡山」がある。建勲神社や船岡温泉が近くにある小高い山であり，清少納言『枕草子』や兼好法師『徒然草』にも登場してくる場所だ。毎年8月16日に行われる「五山送り火」の左大文字が良く見える場所としても人気がある場所である。12月の時季になると，この「船岡山」から降ってくる雨のことを北山時雨という。

　年が明けて，1月から2月頃になると，京都市下京区で冷たい雨が降る日は，京都市北区上賀茂あたりでは雪が降り積もる時季となる。京都市街地の気温に比べて，北区上賀茂の京都産業大学キャンパスの気温はおよそ2℃低いため，毎年，こうした現象が起きている。

Kitayama Drizzle: Tuesday, December 17, 2024

When I commute to university by bicycle during this season, I occasionally hear a sudden “pasa, pasa, pasa” sound near the sleeves of my padded jacket (from The North Face) as I grip the handlebars. This is the first sign that Kitayama Drizzle (Kitayama Shigure) has begun to fall.

Cycling northward on Horikawa Street from Shimogyo Ward in Kyoto, I often encounter Kitayama Drizzle around the intersection of Horikawa and Shimei, near Ichijo Modoribashi and Seimei Shrine, where the Tankosha Building stands on the corner. Similar experiences can also happen when riding along the Kamo River’s riverside path.

In Kyoto’s Kita Ward, there is a spot with an excellent view called Funaokayama. This small hill is home to Kenkun Shrine and Funaoka Onsen and is mentioned in classical works such as Makuranososhi by Seishonagon and Essays in Tsurezuregusa by Yoshida Kenko. It is also a popular spot for viewing the Gozan no Okuribi bonfires, particularly the “Left Daimonji” fire, held every year on August 16. During December, the rain that falls from this Funaokayama area is known as Kitayama Drizzle.

When the new year arrives, around January or February, on days when cold rain falls in Shimogyo Ward, snow often accumulates in areas like Kamigamo in Kita Ward. This phenomenon occurs every year because the temperature at Kyoto Sangyo University’s campus in Kamigamo, Kita Ward, is approximately 2°C lower than in Kyoto’s central urban areas.
