Living at a fast pace allows you to check off many things as completed from your life's list. Further more, "life unexpected" happens more frequently and you naturally not plan, but prepare to react to the surprise. Maybe that is why we smile when we say, "that's an unexpected surprise". Oddly though, I do tend to smile even when I am nervous.
You can go from Tokyo to Hiroshima on the shinkansen, gazing out the window and see so many things that attract your attention. A bright cosmetics billboard in the middle of stretches of green farm land. A man on a Honda Cub appearing to be at a stand still as you shoot past him, wondering how he can stay in the upright position and frozen without a foot on the ground. Yet between point A and B, all that briefly amazed and delighted you has gone past memory into the place that never happened. Reaching your planned destination and looking forward, you just might recall something interesting but can't quite put your finger on it. I guess if I say "that's an unexpected surprise", for me it's to remember something that is totally unrelated to the present and catches me off guard. Like having an ice cube rubbed on your neck on a hot summer day. You shiver and inhale briefly, then a moment of "ahhhh!" Similar to riding a motorcycle fast in the country side , wearing a nice tailor made suit instead of jeans and a jacket. As you break the speed limit in your "ahhhh" moment, the police officer first sees you as his next victim. Suddenly the officer notices you in a business suit and say's "ahhhh" as he allows you to speed away. No ticket today. Maybe his unexpected surprise.
