Miller: Hi, Yoko!
Yoko: Oh, hi! You remember my name!
Miller: Yes. I was very surprised when I listened to your speech in English class. It was very interesting.
Yoko: Thank you, Miller Teacher!
Miller: Please call me Mr. Miller.
Yoko: Mr. Miller? We call our teachers "~ sensei" in Japanese, so I called
you "Miller Teacher."
Miller: In America, we don't call our teachers "~ Teacher."
Yoko: I didn't know that. I thought "Mr. " was " san" in Japanese, so
using it for teachers sounds a little *strange to me.
Miller: We use "Mr." and "Ms." in *formal situations, but some teachers say
to their students, "Please call me by my first name."
Yoko: Really? Japanese students don't do that.
Miller: Some want other people to call them by their first names because
they want to be more *friendly.
Yoko: I see.
Miller: Also, when we talk with someone, we often add their names at the end. For, example, "Good morning, Yoko," "Thank you, Yoko," and "Don't forget your homework, Yoko."
Yoko: It is nice to hear my name. Oh, *by the way, this is my *business
card.
Miller: Wow, that's cool!
Yoko: I made it when I joined a *work experience program. In Japan,
people often *exchange business cards *soon after they meet for the first time.
Miller: That's a good way to remember names. If you have a business card,
you will not forget other person's name. We often exchange business cards after we talk with new people.
Yoko: I want to learn a lot about using names in other *cultures.
