常盤万作

常盤万作 （トキワマンサク）

ユキノシタ目、マンサク科、トキワマンサク属

その和名に常盤（トキワ）とある通り、これは
常緑樹を表した名称となっている。

長らくこれは中国が原産のものとされてきたが
これを覆す発見が日本の各地にて発見されており
三重県にある伊勢神宮での自生が確認された他に
静岡県湖西市では天然記念物にも指定されており
熊本県荒尾市小岱山のものは指定稀少野生動植物
に指定されている。

ただし、日本に自生するこれら常盤万作の花弁は
三箇所ともが白色の種類となっている。

写真に載るトキワマンサクは、赤花となる事から
中国を原産とする種類のもの。冬の間にも勢いの
止まらない葉の間に沢山の花を咲かせる。

同じ万作と名が付きながら、花の在り方の違いを
楽しむのもまた良いものである。

TOKIWA-MANSAKU

As indicated by its Japanese name "Tokiwamansaku," meaning evergreen, this plant is named after its characteristic of being an evergreen tree.


While it has long been believed to be native to China, discoveries in various parts of Japan challenge this assumption. Spontaneous growth has been confirmed at Ise Jingu in Mie Prefecture, designated as a natural monument in Shizuoka's Kosei City, and specified as a rare wild plant in Mount Koidaiyama in Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture.


However, the blossoms of the Tokiwamansaku that grows naturally in Japan are all of the white variety.


The Tokiwamansaku featured in the photo is a type originating from China, recognizable by its red flowers. It blooms profusely among its evergreen leaves throughout the winter.


Despite sharing the name "Mansaku," appreciating the differences in how the flowers present themselves adds another layer to the enjoyment of these plants.
