カギカズラ 花言葉に『奇跡』『特別』『記念』が付く理由とは
鉤蔓 （カギカズラ）
アカネ目、アカネ科、カギカズラ属の蔓性常緑樹
日本、朝鮮、中国が原産となる。
葉脇から湾曲した鋭い鉤爪状の棘が鋭く尖るのが
本種の特徴であり、蔓を使って他の樹木に頼って
それは１０ｍの高さにまで及ぶもの。
これを林業関係者が除去するのには厄介な存在と
なるのだが、これこそが鉤爪が存在する理由だと
考える。また、この鉤爪部分こそが生薬に利用を
されるもので、釣藤鉤（チョウトウコウ）の名前で
呼ばれ、認知症対策、鎮痛剤などに利用される。
さて、この植物にはタイトルにした通りであるが
花言葉に『奇跡』『特別』『記念』が付いている。
鉤爪ではなく、ユニークな花のカタチを指しての
花言葉なのである。どんな花かというと追加した
同じアカネ科の花とほぼ似ている。カギカズラの
花もまた撮影して載せたいと思っている。

Hook Vine (Kagi-kazura in Japanese) is an evergreen climbing plant native to Japan, Korea, and China.
One of its most distinctive features is the sharp, curved hook-like spines that emerge from the leaf axils. These hooks allow the vine to cling to other trees, enabling it to climb up to heights of 10 meters. However, this same characteristic makes it a troublesome plant for forestry workers, as its removal can be quite challenging.
Interestingly, these hook-like structures are also the part used in traditional medicine. Known as Choto-kou (釣藤鉤) in herbal medicine, they are used for dementia prevention, pain relief, and other medicinal purposes.
Now, as mentioned in the title, this plant has the floral meanings of “Miracle,” “Special,” and “Commemoration.” These meanings are not derived from its hooks but rather from the unique shape of its flowers. The blooms closely resemble those of other plants in the Rubiaceae family. I hope to capture and share photographs of Kagi-kazura flowers in the future.
