ヤマボウシ　その名の由来を日本の時代劇も踏まえ紹介

山法師 （ヤマボウシ）

ミズキ目、ミズキ科、ミズキ属の植物。


明日は６月１５日。その日は山法師の日。
明日に備えて山法師の登板である。


日本にも山法師はあるが、海外産のものも流入、
中国南部からインドシナ半島に自生する種類。


国産のものは総包片（四枚の白花弁に見える）は
その先端部だけ紅く色づくが、海外の八重山種は
全てが真っ白である。先端にやや赤みが残るのも
見られるが、国産のものとは見分けると一目瞭然で
あるのだが、最も大きな違いを述べると、海外のは
常緑樹であるが、国産のものは落葉樹となる点。
なので身近にある山法師がどちらのものかだけは
知ってあげよう。


三国界隈を走り回りながら、マンションの共用部
にこれが並べて植えられているのを見つけた。
この樹種は１０〜１５ｍの高さなので、開花して
いるのもダイナミックである。


ハナミズキと似てるのは目、科、属までは共通
だが、実で異なる。ハナミズキの実は毒性だが、
山法師の実は食用になる。


さて、山法師の名称であるが、これは僧兵である
山法師にその姿が似ているから付いた名である。
僧兵って何？となるだろう。海外のお寺でも外部
干渉を避ける為に自戒組織を編成したのがモンク
と呼ばれる闘う僧侶集団。少林寺もそのひとつ。


日本では平安時代中期から戦国時代にかけて、
武芸の鍛錬の末に戦闘に長けた僧侶がこの山法師
である。京都や奈良の興福寺、東大寺、延暦寺、
園城寺などは戦闘集としての武者が沢山いた訳で
ある。その当時の僧侶の姿を見てみるとしよう。
時代劇ではその姿を一度は見た事があると思う。

Tomorrow is June 15th, which is Yamaboushi Day. In preparation for it, Yamaboushi takes the stage today.


While Japan has its native Yamaboushi, foreign varieties have also been introduced. Some species are native to southern China and the Indochina Peninsula.


The domestic variety has bracts (which look like four white petals) that turn red only at the tips. In contrast, the double-flowered foreign species is entirely white. Some may have slight reddish tips, but they are easily distinguishable from the Japanese variety. However, the most significant difference is that the foreign species is evergreen, while the Japanese one is deciduous. So, it’s worth knowing whether the Yamaboushi near you is domestic or imported.


While moving around the Mikuni area, I spotted these trees planted in rows in a shared space of an apartment complex. Since this species grows to a height of 10 to 15 meters, its blooming appearance is quite dynamic.


Yamaboushi resembles Hanamizuki (Flowering Dogwood) because they belong to the same order, family, and genus. However, they differ in their fruits. The fruit of Hanamizuki is toxic, whereas the fruit of Yamaboushi is edible.


Now, about the name Yamaboushi. It comes from the resemblance of the tree’s appearance to Yamaboushi—the warrior monks (sōhei, 僧兵).


You might be wondering, “What are sōhei?” In some foreign temples, self-defense groups were formed to protect against external threats, and these were known as warrior monks (monks). The famous Shaolin monks are one example.


In Japan, from the mid-Heian period to the Sengoku period, monks who mastered martial arts and became skilled in combat were known as Yamaboushi. Temples such as Kōfuku-ji, Tōdai-ji, Enryaku-ji, and Onjō-ji in Kyoto and Nara had many warrior monks.


If you look at depictions of monks from that era, you might recognize their appearance from period dramas—you’ve probably seen them at least once.

これは尺八を吹きながら、各地を托鉢する修行僧。
この様に顔が隠れるゆえにこれに扮した暗殺者も
いた様である。見分け方は尺八の下手さである。
下手な尺八を吹きながら、こちらへとやってくる
虚無僧を見かけたならば即刻、その場から遠くへ
立ち去ろう。

Komusō (虚無僧)
These were monks who traveled from place to place practicing takuhatsu (alms-seeking) while playing the shakuhachi (bamboo flute).Because their faces were hidden by their distinctive straw hats, some assassins are said to have disguised themselves as Komusō.
The key to identifying them? Their shakuhachi skills—or lack thereof.If you ever see a Komusō approaching while playing the shakuhachi poorly, it would be wise to leave the area immediately.

険しい山の奥にまで入り込んで、過酷な修業に
身を投じて悟りを開く為の僧侶である。螺貝
（ホラガイ）を吹くのはこの修行僧の事であり
烏天狗はこれらに嘴と羽をもった妖怪。それに
長鼻と芭蕉扇を持てば天狗となる。螺貝の音が
したらできる限り遠くへ逃げていくべきである。
それだけの強敵なのである。

These are monks who venture deep into rugged mountains, undergoing harsh training to attain enlightenment.The horagai (conch shell trumpet) is blown by these ascetic monks, while the Karasu Tengu (crow tengu) is a mythical creature with a beak and wings, said to be derived from them. If one possesses a long nose and a bashō fan, they become a full-fledged Tengu.If you hear the sound of a horagai, it’s best to flee as far as possible—they are formidable opponents.

とっての山法師である。侍の持つ刀類とは違い
山法師はリーチの長い槍や薙刀を武器にした。
これは戦闘において有利。相手の足首を切れば
勝ったも同然で、戦国時代には悪僧の名称でも
呼ばれたのは、それだけ手強い敵だったから。
山の中でコレに見つかったら長物の弱点である
竹林の中へスタコラサッサと逃げ込もう。多く
茂った竹林が薙刀にとっての結界となる。

This gave them a tactical advantage in combat—if they could cut an opponent’s ankle, victory was nearly assured.During the Sengoku period, they were often referred to as evil monks due to their formidable strength in battle.If you ever encounter one deep in the mountains, remember the weakness of long weapons—quickly escape into a dense bamboo grove. The thick bamboo will act as a natural barrier.
