Coordinator for International Relations’ Monthly Column by Cameron Schiesler
Introduction
P27 ご挨拶
Hello, my name is Cameron Schiesler. I was born and raised in the state of Kentucky in America. I have been working in Date City as a coordinator for international relations (CIR) since early August of this year. While I have been to Japan multiple times before, this is my first time coming to the Tohoku region. Upon arriving, I was in awe of the natural beauty that Date City has to offer. The vibrant and varied greens of the mountains trailing under the blue sky make for a picturesque summer scene and I am excited to see the views change alongside the seasons.
Just after I arrived to Date City, I enjoyed visiting the Hobara Summer Festival and indulging in shaved ice and fried chicken from the local restaurants. This was a great opportunity for me to not only try the cooking of the local restaurants, but also to meet and experience how friendly and welcoming those working there are, demonstrating the a warm and tight-knit atmosphere of Date City.
I am looking forward to connecting and exchanging cultures with the people of Date City through events, school visits, and more. Creating a positive English experience for the children here will be a focus of mine and I hope to invoke an interest in English for the locals via English language courses, as well as assisting foreign residents with Japanese language courses.
In America I majored in Asian studies with a focus on Japan and Japanese language. Through my university I participated in one short-term study abroad and two half-year study abroad exchange programs. Through learning Japanese, countless teachers and students have helped me participate in and enjoy Japanese culture and for that I am very thankful. After reflecting on these experiences, helping others enjoy a new language and culture has become my goal. Just as many people have helped me grow to love learning a new language and culture, I would like to be able to do the same for others and help spark a new love for them. I look forward to meeting and creating new bonds with the people here in Date City!
