Christmas Music
As the Christmas season is upon us and I am spending Christmas away from my family for the first time, I am reflecting on what made my Christmas holidays so special back home in America. Of course there’s the presents, Christmas trees, cookies, and more, but one part of Christmas celebrations that I will need to make an effort to include is Christmas music. Even among those who celebrate Christmas, there are some who can’t stand Christmas music. However my family absolutely loves Christmas music and it plays in our homes and cars starting in November and into the New Year. There are countless Christmas songs in rotation, including ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey, which despite being released to lukewarm public reception in 1994, has grown in popularity each year, ultimately leading it to top American charts each holiday season for the past four years.
Of course you can hear Christmas music, both Western and Japanese, out in the wild in Japan, with the aforementioned ‘All I Want for Christmas’ being one of the best-selling singles by a Western artist. Additionally, a commonly played Christmas song in Japan is ‘Last Christmas’ by British pop duo Wham! While this song is also very popular in America around Christmas time, I was rather surprised to hear the melancholy tune being played at stores here in Japan.
There are, however, an abundance of other great Christmas songs beloved by America, including some of my favorites like ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘The Christmas Song.’ If you’re interested, please give any of the songs I mentioned here a listen!
