それなりにたくさんの音楽を聴いてきたので、感謝の言葉を伝えたくなった自分（＃１１）
Billy Joelに感謝。
私が中学生の頃、枕元のラジオから聴こえて
きた哀愁漂うピアノと口笛は「The Stranger」
のイントロだった。すると突然、バンドサウンド
に切り替り、ビリーの熱い歌唱でどんどん引き
込まれていった。
この曲が収録された1977年発売のアルバム
『ストレンジャー』は、全編通して聴くと、
彼が育ったニューヨークの街を連想させてくれる。
ただ、中学生の私がイメージできるビジュアルは
観光用の絵葉書レベル。それだけに大人に なった
ら実際に旅行してみたかった。
願いは叶うもので、仕事ではあったが２０代で
その夢を叶える事ができた。自腹でヘリコプター
をチャーターし、ニューヨークの摩天楼を空撮
したのだ。プロペラ音がうるさい中、私の頭の
中では 「New York State of Mind」が流れていた。
ちなみに、空撮を決行した理由は、街を歩き
ながらの撮影では、あまり綺麗ではなかった
からだ。街ブラ的な地上での撮影なら、銀座
の方が断然美しい。なので、美しく思わせて
くれたビリー・ジョエルの 音楽性に対して
感謝しかない。
「Uptown Girl」のようなコーラス重視の
明るい曲も好きだが、どうしてもピアノの
弾き語りを求めてしまいたくなる。全ての
アルバムを聴いた中で個人的なお勧めは、
1976年に発売された『ニューヨーク物語』だ。
「Say Goodbye to Hollywood」に始まり、
「Miami 2017」まで聴きごたえ十分。いつか
このアルバムを聴きながらマンハッタンの景色
を宿泊先の窓から眺めてみたい。

Gratitude to Billy Joel.
When I was in junior high, I heard the melancholic piano and whistle from
my bedside radio, which was the intro to "The Stranger." Then suddenly, it switched to a band sound, and I was increasingly drawn in by Billy's passionate singing.
The album "The Stranger," released in 1977 and featuring this song, evokes the streets of New York where he grew up when listened to in full. However, the visual image I could conjure as a junior high student was at the level of a postcard for tourists. Because of that, I wanted to actually visit as an adult.
Wishes do come true, and although it was for work, I was able to fulfill that dream in my twenties. I chartered a helicopter at my own expense and took aerial shots of New York's skyscrapers. Despite the loud propeller noise, "New York State of Mind" was playing in my head. By the way, the reason I carried out the aerial photography was that shooting while walking through the city didn't produce very beautiful images. If it were ground-level city stroll photography, Ginza would be far more beautiful. Therefore, I have nothing but gratitude for Billy Joel's musicality, which made it seem so beautiful.
I also like bright songs with a focus on choruses, such as "Uptown Girl," but I inevitably crave piano solo performances. Out of all the albums I've listened to, my personal recommendation is "Turnstiles," released in 1976. It starts with "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" and has plenty of substance all the way through "Miami 2017." Someday, I'd like to listen to this album while gazing at the Manhattan scenery from my hotel window.
