それなりにたくさんの音楽を聴いてきたので、感謝の言葉を伝えたくなった自分（＃１４）
Daryl Hall & John Oatesに感謝。
その日は、なかなか眠れずに深夜２時を過ぎても
枕の後ろにあるラジオはついたままだった。
明日も学校はあるし、少し焦りの気持ちがうまれた時に
流れてきたのがダリル・ホール＆ジョン・オーツの
「She's Gone」だった。
静かな曲の出だしなので眠気が助長され、そろそろ
ラジオを消そうとした時に、この曲はサビの手前で
ヴォーカルがシャウトして、大サビに突入する。
力強い歌声はそのままに、コーラスの掛け合いや
ストリングスのアレンジが美しく、電源OFFのボタン
にかかっていた指が止まり、聴き惚れてしまった。
DJが紹介したアーティスト名が長すぎて、ちゃんと
聞き取ることができず、この曲が収録された作品を
手に取るまでかなり時間が掛かった。学校に行って
も海外のポップスを聴いている友達はひとりもいな
かったので、自分で調べるしかなかった。
どこの国籍の人かもわからず、どんなジャンルにも
属さない印象のダリル・ホール＆ジョン・オーツ。
ある意味、余計なことを考えずに聴けるそんな彼ら
の音楽が好きだった。よくわからない孤独感に押し
潰されそうになりながら学生生活を送っていた自分
が「Rich Girl」「Wait for Me」といった’70年代の曲
を聴いて癒された。シンプルで何度も繰り返される
サビは学生だった私をいつも元気づけた。
'８0年代に入ると彼らは大躍進を遂げる。
「Kiss on My List」「Private Eyes」「Maneater」
「Say It Isn't So」「Out of Touch」…ビルボード・
チャートの常連になっていた。ソウル？ロック？
ダンス？私が彼らの音楽を知った時からひとつの
ジャンルでは括れない印象はそのままに、様々な
チャレンジを試み、それでもヒットに結びつけて
くる彼らをカッコよく思っていた。
海外ポップスを取り上げる番組制作の仕事に就き、
あらためて彼らのキャリアを調べた時、1974年に
発売された『War Babies』というアルバムを、私が
大好きなTodd Rundgrenがプロデュースしていたと
いう事実を知って驚かされた。音楽は人を引き寄せ
る力がある。きっと、私がダリル・ホール＆ジョン
・オーツに魅了されたのは偶然ではない。

That night, I couldn't sleep, and even past 2 AM, the radio behind my pillow was still on. With school tomorrow, I was starting to feel a bit anxious when "She's Gone" by Daryl Hall & John Oates came on.
The quiet start of the song made me even sleepier, and just as I was about to turn off the radio, the song's vocal shout came in just before the chorus, leading into a powerful refrain. The strong vocals, combined with the beautiful interplay of the chorus and strings arrangement, made me pause my finger on the power-off button and fall in love with the music. The DJ's introduction of the artist name was too long for me to catch properly, and it took quite some time before I could find the album with this song. None of my friends at school listened to overseas pop, so I had to find it out by myself.
Not knowing their nationality or fitting into any particular genre, Daryl Hall & John Oates' music had an appeal of listening without overthinking. As a student, struggling with a sense of inexplicable loneliness, I found solace in '70s songs like "Rich Girl" and "Wait for Me." The simple and repetitive choruses always uplifted me as a student.
Entering the '80s, they made great strides with hits like "Kiss on My List," "Private Eyes," "Maneater," "Say It Isn't So," and "Out of Touch," becoming regulars on the Billboard charts. Soul? Rock? Dance? The impression that their music couldn't be confined to a single genre remained, as they took on various challenges and still managed to create hits, which I found impressive.
When I started working on producing a program featuring overseas pop music and looked into their career anew, I was surprised to learn that my favorite Todd Rundgren had produced their 1974 album "War Babies." Music has a power to draw people in, and surely, it wasn't a coincidence that I was captivated by Daryl Hall & John Oates.
