それなりにたくさんの音楽を聴いてきたので、感謝の言葉を伝えたくなった自分（＃９）
Todd Rundgrenに感謝。たぶん私は、この
アーティストに一番お金を注いだかもしれない。
アナログ盤からCDへの移行で一気にリリース
されたTodd名義のアルバムはもちろん、彼が
バンド・メンバーの一員となっていたNAZZや
UTOPIA、そして、彼がプロデュースしたアー
ティストのCDなども購入。気付いたらToddが
手掛ける楽曲を知ることが私の趣味となっていた。
そう、Toddはアルバム・アーティストであり、
数曲知っているだけではどんなアーティスト
なのかは語れない。
極端な例をあげれば、1985年発売の『A Cappella』
は、本人の声だけで多重録音したアカペラ楽曲
１０曲で完結。初めて聴いた時は、感動を超えて
少し怖い印象すらあった。ただ、次作となる
『Nearly Human』では一転、一発録りのバンド・
サウンドでソウルフル。幅広い層に受け入れて
もらえそうなアルバムで、ファンのひとりとして
ほっとしたのを記憶している。この作品のほか、
Todd初心者には1978年発売の
『Hermit of Mink Hollow』もお勧め。何度聴いても
飽きさせない曲構成、ポップス寄りに振ってくれた
内容でアレンジも秀逸だ。さらに興味をもって頂け
たなら、初期の作品から地道に聴いて、もっと知って
頂きたい。
私は、人間愛に溢れた歌詞においても影響を受けた。
笑顔になれる楽曲しかつくらないアーティストでは
ない。その時々でどんな心境でも寄り添ってくれる
曲をたくさんつくってくれたTodd Rundgrenをずっと
尊敬している。
あらためて、私が演出した回の音楽番組にゲスト出演
して頂いたことにも感謝。生演奏もしてくれて・・・
もう死んでもいいと思った瞬間だ。Toddに想いを伝え、
控室で彼から頂いた梅干しの味が今でも忘れられない。

Gratitude to Todd Rundgren. I might have invested the most money in this artist. In addition to the albums released under his name during the transition from vinyl to CD, I also purchased CDs of NAZZ and UTOPIA, bands he was part of, as well as CDs of artists he produced. Before I knew it, getting to know the songs Todd worked on became my hobby. Todd is an album artist, and you can't describe what kind of artist he is just by knowing a few songs.
For instance, take the extreme example of his 1985 release "A Cappella," which is a complete collection of 10 a cappella tracks, all performed with multiple layers of his own voice. The first time I heard it, I felt a bit scared beyond being moved. But in his next work, "Nearly Human," the soulful sound of a band recorded live in one take marked a drastic change. I remember feeling relieved as a fan, thinking it was an album that could be accepted by a wider audience. In addition to this work, I also recommend "Hermit of Mink Hollow," released in 1978, for those new to Todd. The song composition never gets old no matter how many times you listen, the content leans towards pop, and the arrangements are excellent. If you become more interested, I hope you'll listen to his early works and get to know him better.
I was also influenced by his lyrics filled with human love. He isn't an artist who only creates songs that make you smile. Todd Rundgren has always made songs that accompany you in various emotional states, and I have always respected him for that.
Once again, I'm grateful for his guest appearance on the music program I produced. He even performed live... it was a moment when I thought I could die happy. I still can't forget the taste of the pickled plums he gave me in the dressing room after I expressed my feelings to him.
