ホテルカリフォルニアとアメリカの斜陽

ウエストコーストサウンドを語るうえでイーグルスは外せない要因だ。
中でもの「ホテルカリフォルニア」で歌われている歌詞は1960年代前半の古き良きアメリカから変貌していくアメリカを象徴した代表曲である。

砂漠のハイウエイから迷い込んだホテルカリフォルニアはアメリカの象徴。
歌詞の中で出てくるこの歌詞は変貌したアメリカを表している。

So I called up the Captain　“Please bring me my wine”
He said, “We haven’t had that spirit hereSince nineteen sixty-nine”
”ワインを飲みたいんだが”とボーイに頭に告げると
"1969年からというものワインは一切置いてありません”と彼は答えた

歌詞の中にでてくる”spirit””とは酒の種類と"精神"をかけたものだと言われている。つまりはベトナム戦争にアメリカが介入した1969年以降のアメリカは
多くの若者が戦地に送られ、戦争への反対や、自分の意志で生死を左右されることに対する反発が、ヒッピー文化へとつながり戦争に参加した兵士たちは精神的な苦痛を一時的に忘れるための手段としてドラッグの使用をタブー視せず、むしろ精神的な探求の手段として肯定的に捉えていた。ヒッピー文化の広がりと若者たちの解放感を象徴するものとして受け止められたドラッグの蔓延でもはや古き良き時代は空前の灯と化したのだ。

そして歌詞の最後はこう締めくくられている。

最後に覚えているのは出口を求めて走り去る自分の姿
もとの場所に戻る通路があるはずだ
すると夜警が言った”落着きなさい”
我々はここに住み着く運命なのだ
いつでもチエックアウトはできるがここを去ることはできはしない。

ジミ・ヘンドリックス、ジャニス・ジョプリン、ジム・モリソンなどこの時代薬物中毒で亡くなった有名ミュージシャンは数多く、多くミュージシャンもまた薬物に手をそめるそんな時代であったのだ。
