French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021) vol.1

可笑しくて不思議で可愛くて楽しい映画

   
      I went to a cinema to watch “French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun” with my boyfriend who recommend me to watch it. The title might be the longest than every movie which I’ve ever watched, and this is a its plot below.
      The story is set in a fictional editorial office “the French Dispatch” magazine of 20th French town. This magazine was published by a branch of an American Newspaper company, and talented and unique writers are active. Their magazines acquire popularity because of their articles which go deep from fashion to foods that other companies cannot imitate. However, the editor-in-chief was suddenly dead by a heart attack. And due to his will, the series of magazine publishing is going to be stopped.
      I wrote its story quite long, but it is just a beginning and hook of the story. This movie is constructed by some story parts like an actual magazine. When I watched the movie, I felt there was a table of contents. These short stories don’t have strong relations, but also these have connections, and it makes me feel like reading a magazine in my room. I’ve watched a lot of unique movies ever, and this one must be one of them.Each short stories are so interesting, and I remember well the first one.
      There are two main characters, a man and a woman. A man who is captured in a cage because of his cruel crimes, and he is also a painter who paints abstract arts. A woman who is a police grew up in a strict family, and also she is a model of the painter. As you imagine, both of them fell in love with each other. In this process, it was funny that watching the prisoner  abides by her command. Two of them seems to match, but a couple of a criminal and police must have too many complicate problems, right?  So, as you can imagine, regarding their relationships, the happy end cannot happen. And I like the scene of a chaotic battle scene between the prisoner painter and a dealer who was fussed by a paint of the wall which can’t sell. In addition, a lot of other people interfered this fight. I don’t remember well, but I like that this scene is made by stop-motions. 
      In closing, a bare body of the policewoman was so beautiful as a sculpture. 
      I want to write about other short stories, so I guess I will the other day.

　この映画を薦めてくれた恋人と共に映画館を訪れた。タイトルは『French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun』、私が今まで観た映画の中で一番長いかもしれない。そして、そのあらすじは以下にある。
　物語の舞台は、フランスの20番街にある架空の雑誌「The French Dispatch」編集部。この雑誌は、アメリカの新聞社の支社が発行しており、個性的で優秀なライターが活躍している。ファッションからグルメまで、他社には真似のできない深みのある記事で人気を博している。しかし、その編集長が心臓発作で急死してしまう。そして、彼の遺言によって雑誌の連載はストップすることになった。

　あらすじを長めに書いたが、それは物語の始まりとフックに過ぎない。この映画は、実際の雑誌のように、いくつかのストーリーパートで構成されている。映画を観ていると、目次があるような気がしてくる。短編集には、強い関係性はないけれども、つながりがあって、自分の部屋で雑誌を読んでいるような感覚にさせられる。今までたくさんのユニークな映画を見てきたが、この映画もそのひとつなのだろう。

　どの短編もとても面白く、また、最初の短編はよく覚えている。主人公は男と女の二人。男は残酷な犯罪を犯して檻に入れられた犯罪者であり、抽象画を描く画家でもある。警察官の女性は厳格な家庭で育ち、また、彼女はこの画家のモデルにもなっている。そして誰もがそう考えるように二人は恋に落ちる。その過程で、犯罪者の男が彼女の命令に従っているのが可笑しかった。お似合いの二人だけれど、犯罪者と警察のカップルは複雑な問題が多すぎるんじゃない？だから、ご想像の通り二人の関係については、ハッピーエンドはありえない。あと、囚人画家と売れない壁の絵で騒いでいた売人とのカオスなバトルシーンが好き。しかも、この戦いには、他の多くの人々が介入してくる。このシーンはよくは覚えていないけれど、ストップモーションで作られているのが良い。あと、最後にはなるけれど、婦警の裸身が彫刻のように美しかった。
