January 24, 2022：誕生日、運転免許更新 (Birthday, Renewal of Driving License)

 Yesterday was my 62nd birthday. I did not have anything special for the day like having a party or presents. I just spent the day as usual.
 I made a big decision not to renew my driver's license because I hate having safe driving training I have to receive when renewing the license. It is held in a small and crowded room of a local police station and exposes me to the risk of getting a COVID-19 infection. Further, it is too late and dangerous for me to restart driving. I don't want to cause such a car accident as other elderly drivers have recently caused.
 Since I returned from Europe, I have never driven in Japan and have always relied on public transportation and my wife's driving. Accordingly, losing the license will not cause me any problem. I just have renewed it because it is a valid ID.

　昨日はボクの62回目の誕生日でした。誕生日だからといってパーティーをしたり、プレゼントをもらうなどの特別なことはありませんでした。単誕生日も淡々と過ぎました。
　でも、ひとつだけ大きな決断をしました。免許を更新しないことにしました。コロナ感染が再拡大するなかで、地元の警察署の小部屋で講習を受けたくないという思い強かったためです。また、今更、ハンドルを握るのは非常に危険と判断しためです。昨今ニュースで報道される高齢ドライバー事故を起こす危険があります。
　欧州から帰国して以来、日本で運転したことがありませんでした。これまでも、ぼくの母ボスの運転と公共交通機関を頼りに移動してきましたので、免許がなくなってもまったく問題ありません。これまでは、身分証明書代わりになるかと思い免許証を更新してきただけです。
