前回に引き続き、元海外の大学職員による日本の大学職員のための英単語集・その２です！お役に立てれば幸いです。
This course has lecture, tutorial, and lab components. We will take attendance at the beginning of class.
Course：科目
Lecture：講義
Tutorial：チュートリアル
Discussion（ディスカッション）と呼ばれることもあります。Lab(oratory)：実験
「研究所」「研究室」という意味もありますが、この文脈では「実験」と読みます。Take attendance：出席を取る
Take（取る）+ attendance（出席）Class：授業
【和訳】この科目は講義、チュートリアル、実験で構成されています。授業開始時に出席を取ります。
The final grade breakdown is as follows: the final exam is worth 40%, the midterm is worth 20%, assignments are worth 30%, and class participation is worth 10%. This information, is on the course syllabus. Don't forget to read the section on academic integrity, especially the part on plagiarism.

Academic integrity：アカデミック・インテグリティ、学問における誠実さ
Academic（学問的、学術的）＋ integrity（誠実さ、真摯さ、高潔さ）
Academic dishonesty と academic misconduct は似ていて、両方学術不正、学業不正（論文代行、剽窃、カンニング*など）を指しますが、少しニュアンスが違うように思えます。Academic dishonesty は行動の『不誠実さ』や『不正直さ』を強調しており、academic misconduct は行動の『規則を破った』ことに重きを置いているように感じます。Plagiarism：盗作、剽窃
【和訳】最終成績の内訳は、期末試験40％、中間試験20％、課題30％、授業参加10％です。この情報はシラバスに記載されています。アカデミック・インテグリティのセクション、特に剽窃に関する部分を忘れずに読んでください。
*カンニングは和製英語で、英語では cheating（チーティング）です。Cunning という言葉がありますが、『狡猾な』『悪賢い』を意味します。
Undergraduate students who complete their Bachelor's program earn their Bachelor's degree. Some graduates who did/could not attend the convocation have their diplomas mailed to them instead.
Undergraduate student(s)：大学生、学部生
大学院生は graduate student(s)Graduate(s)：（名詞）卒業生
卒業する（動詞）「graduate」とは発音が大きく違います。卒業する graduate は、ate の部分を /eɪt/（カタカナ表記ですと「エイト」に近い）と発音しますが、卒業生の graduate は、ate の部分を /ət/（カタカナ表記ですと「エト」に近い）と発音します。
上記の undergraduate（学部生）や graduate students（大学院生）の発音も、卒業生の graduate と同じ発音です。Convocation：卒業式
Convocation の代わりに、graduation ceremony や commencement や congregation が使われることもあります。Diploma：学位記、卒業証書
【和訳】学士課程を修了した学部生は、学士号を取得します。卒業式に出席しなかった、またはできなかった卒業生には、卒業証書が郵送されます。
Not all Master's programs require a thesis, but writing a thesis is encouraged for those who wish to pursue research and academic careers in the future. Doctoral students must pass the candidacy exam, write their Doctoral dissertation, and pass their thesis defence.

Academic：（形容詞）学術的な、大学に関する
名詞では、（大学の）学者や教師という意味を持ちます。Candidacy / qualifying exam：博士候補試験
Candidacyはイギリス連邦諸国、qualifyingはアメリカで使われます。Doctoral dissertation：博士論文
(thesis) defence / defense：博士論文審査
Defence はイギリスの綴り、defenseはアメリカの綴りです。
【和訳】すべての修士課程で修士論文の提出が必要というわけではありませんが、将来、研究や学術的なキャリアを目指す人には、修士論文の執筆が奨励されています。博士課程の学生は、候補者認定試験に合格し、博士論文を執筆し、論文審査に合格しなければなりません。
There are many different kinds of Faculty members: Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Adjunct Professors, Visiting Professors, Sessional Lecturers, and more. Some Faculty members take on administrative positions (such as Program Chair/Director, Department Head, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, Dean, and so on).

Administrative：運営、管理に携わる

【和訳】さまざまな教員がいらっしゃいます： 教授、准教授、助教授、非常勤教授、客員教授、非常勤講師などです。管理職（専攻長、学科長、副学部長、学部長など）に就く教員もいます。
*厳密には、副学部長は Vice-Dean です。Associate Dean も Assistant Dean も、Dean や Vice-Dean に与えられた職務を遂行します。Associate Dean の方が Assistant Dean よりランクが高いように聞こえますが、大学によります。
I had the honor of participating in the academic procession at a graduation ceremony before. As one of the two alumni representatives, I accompanied the faculty representatives, the student representative, the Chancellor, the President and Vice-Chancellor, and the Deans.
Alumni：卒業生、もしくは元学生（実は、その学校・大学を卒業していなくても、以前そこに在籍したことがあり、現在はそこに在籍していない人たちのことを alumni と呼ぶことができます。）

Alumnus は単数、男性
Alumna は単数、女性
Alumnae は複数、女性Chancellor：理事長*
Vice-Chancellor は副理事長President：学長*
【和訳】以前、卒業式でアカデミック・プロセッション（行列）に参加したことがあります。卒業生代表の一人として、私は教員代表、学生代表、理事長、学長、副学長、学部長に同行しました。
*学長や理事長の訳は、とても難しいです。ブリティッシュコロンビア大学には、Chair of the Board of Governors と Chancellor と President（兼Vice-Chancellor）と Provost がそれぞれいらっしゃるのですが、ところによっては Chair of the Board of Governors とChancellorが両方「理事長」と訳されていたり、PresidentとProvostが両方「学長」「総長」と訳されていたりで…。今回の訳では、『Chancellor＝理事長』、『President and Vice-Chancellor＝学長（兼副理事長）』としました。

【和訳】研究室には、研究責任者のほかに、博士研究員、大学院生研究助手、学部生研究助手、そしてボランティアがいることもあります。
During the pandemic, some departmental administrators needed to take medical leave. Administrators from other departments were seconded into the open positions, and some staff members from the department were temporarily promoted into the administrator positions. Then, the open positions were backfilled with temporary staff.
Administrator：管理者、管理人、責任者、マネージャー
Departmental administrator は、学科の管理者Medical leave：医療休暇、病気休暇、療養休暇
Seconded：出向する、一時的に異動する
名詞は secondment
数える時の「second」とは発音が大きく違います。数える second は「SEcond」と最初の音節に重きを置きますが、異動の second は「seCOnd」と二つ目の音節を強調します。Position：ポジション、役職
Promoted：昇進、昇格する
名詞は promotion
Temporarily promoted （名詞：temporary promotion）は、一時的に昇進することを意味します。Backfill：補充、埋め戻し
Temporary (temp) staff：臨時職員、派遣社員
【和訳】コロナ禍中、いくつかの学科の管理者が医療休暇を取らざるを得なくなりました。他の学科からの管理者が空いたポジションに異動し、学科のスタッフが一時的に管理者として昇格しました。その後、空いたポジションは臨時スタッフで補充されました。
