歳時記 Saijiki

季語・・・季語とは、春、夏、秋、冬、新年の五つの季節を象徴的に表す言葉、俳句などに用いられる。
歳時記・・・歳時記（さいじき）は、季語＝四季の事物や年中行事などをまとめた書物のことである。
現在、「まかなん」で、歳時記を閲覧中です。友人を通して、親戚の遺品整理をされている方より、たくさんの俳句関係の書物が見つかったので、見に来ませんかと声をかけてもらいました。その中から、歳時記を譲っていただきました。
父も俳句を嗜み、私にとっての父の形見は、何よりも角川書店の歳時記です。昭和戦後の文化復興への角川氏の偉業に圧倒されます。
「まかなん」での、ｗｅｌｃｏｍｅ句も、時折、この角川の歳時記を紐解き選んでいます。
さて、せっかくなので、有名な芭蕉句を紹介しましょう。
古池や蛙飛びこむ水の音
(ふるいけやかわずとびこむみずのおと)
The old pond,
A frog jumps in,
The sound of the water.
季語は蛙、季節は春です。
さまざまな翻訳があるそうですが、俳句は５７５で季語を入れ、韻もあるので、この翻訳でベストがどうか、私にはわかりませんが。いずれにせよ、日本を知るのに、歳時記ほどすばらしい書物はないでしょう。

Seasonal Words: Seasonal words are words that are used as symbolic representation for the five seasons i.e spring, summer, autumn, winter, and the new year.
They are often used in haiku and other forms of poetry.
Saijiki: A saijiki is a book that is used to compile seasonal items and annual events, etc.
Folks at Makanan have been recently browsing and compiling several sajiki books.Through a dear friend, a person who has been sorting through the belongings of a relative had requested me to visit and to take a look at many books related to haiku that had been found.He had given me this saijiki from the bundle.
My father also enjoyed haiku, and my most treasured belonging from him is Kadokawa Shoten's saijiki.
One might feel overwhelmed by Kadokawa's major efforts in reviving culture in the postwar Showa period. I sometimes go through Kadokawa's Saijiki and select poems to be used to welcome people to Makanan.
Now, let me introduce you a famous haiku by Basho.
(furuike-ya kawazu-tobikomumizu-no-oto)
An old pond,
A frog jumps in,
The sound of the water.
The seasonal word is frog, and the season is spring.
There have been plethora of translations, but since haiku is limited to 575 seasonal words and rhymes,it is challenging to find the best suited and accurate translation.
Despite this, there would be no better book to learn about Japan than Saijiki.
