■Explanation
The classical period in which Beethoven was active was a time of rapid development of the piano, and whenever a new piano was developed and its range expanded, Beethoven composed piano sonatas that made full use of its capabilities.
The “Passion” was composed using the latest piano of the time, a French Erard, and is considered to be Beethoven's masterpiece of the middle period.
The title “Passions” was later given to the work because of the magnificent and passionate performance that fully utilized the performance capabilities of the state-of-the-art piano of the time.
