"Well then, will you bear the responsibility for all of my life?"
Hi there! It's Maruko.
Today I want to think about the balance of my main occupation and side job.
Does your company prohibit a side job?
At my company, there's a rule to prohibit a side job. I think most of the companies in Japan have it, too.
My ex-coworker had started the side job in the online community and received some amount of money from customers. She did SNS by her own name and picture and was found out by the company. Then she needed to quit the company unavoidably. (Luckily her income by the side business was enough so that she chose to start her own business!)
When I come to think about doing SNS by my real name and real picture, but I can't do this because I remember this accident.
"Being in a company that prohibits a side job IS a risk." by Katsuma-san
I wrote the same thing yesterday, but I think this is really important so I'll repeat it again and again until you memorize it!
Previously, at the "Katsuma Juku" monthly meeting, I asked one question to Katsuma-san.
Me: "I can't show up my face on the internet because I'm in a company that prohibits side jobs. What would you do if Katsuma-san was in the same environment?"
The answer returned from Katsuma-san;
Katsuma-san: Being in a company that prohibits a side job IS a risk.
Yes, it's obviously true.
But, in fact, it's more difficult to find a company which allows employee to do a side job.
So that I changed my mind.
If it's a risk to belong to the company which prohibits a side job, then I will do my side job by the way not leak out to the company.
In Japan, if someone gains 200K yen by his/her side business, they need to file a final tax return. So that I changed my mind like this way; "I'll do my side job until I gain 200K yen a year and if my income becomes more than this amount, I'll begin to think about it seriously".
200K yen in a year. I need to gain 16K yen per month. If I gain this amount per month, it should be a big positive impact on my budget.
The biggest risk is to rely on one source of income.
I'm afraid of starting a side business...
What should I do if my side business leak out to my company?
You might think as above, but think twice which risk is higher;
to make one more source of income, or rely on only one source of income.
Can you rely on only one company to build your career?
The risks of relying upon only one company are not only income, but also career building. If you count on a company for your important career building, the luck affects your career a lot. (for example, when your boss is not congenial with you ...)
If you are eager to develop your career and try several kinds of side jobs, someday one of them might hit a great success.
So, if you want to live a life full of possibilities, you need to take a risk to a certain extent.
This is the message from one woman from the book "IN THE COMPANY OF WOMEN" if we want to do something by our own name, taking a risk is mandatory.
